ABOUT THE HOUSE
366 Hill Street's iconic house, home to the Ernst de Jong Academy of Fine Art, is on a 991m2 piece of prime land for a variety of uses. Either to develop or better still, to keep this home office and studio as a functioning place of work and play. With 14 rooms in the main section of the house, and an additional 7 in a self contained apartment overlooking a 3.5m deep diving pool, this property caters for a variety of interests and needs.
In the main section of the house there are two very large studios. The main studio has celings 5m high, and was originally a gymnasium - it still has it's ballet bar and large mirror. Upstairs is the slightly smaller studio. Both of these rooms have complete underfloor heating.
In the front of the house there is a stunning entrance hall, which leads to the lounge space. The lounge has natural light streaming through the north facing glass windows and doors throughout the day and is spacious enough for large dinner parties, and welcoming guests. These doors open to the garden patios and provide a merger of the outside and inside spaces.
Upstairs, there are two offices, both of which overlook the studio and lounge areas as well as a large boardroom with a ten-seater table. Also upstairs, there is a kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom/library - perfect for guests to use, or to convert into more office space and facilities for employees or students whichever the case may be.
The living space downstairs features a passage leading to one main bedroom which opens directly to the garden, as well as two smaller rooms, all with built in closets. There is a spacious bathoom with a bath and shower that caters for downstairs in this part of the house. These rooms can easily be used as offices or remain as the bedrooms they are. The main kitchen is downstairs and provides for the back entrace to the driveway.
The house has a combination of polished, deep coloured brick floors, the studio rubber surfaces, tiles and carpets upstairs. All the walls are painted white, and are rough plastered brick surfaces.
In the self contained apartment section of the house, built in 2009, there is a tiled studio/dining room downstairs, as well as a kitchenette and bathroom with a large bathtub and shower. A spiral staircase leads upstairs to the main bedroom, with laminate wooden floors, overlooking the pool. This bedroom leads to a scullery, en-suite bathroom with a shower, as well as another room originally used as a child's room. The main bedroom here could easily be used as a lounge instead, leading to the bedroom. This section of the house is inspired by a ship, with round window portals, and the overlook of the pool. The bedroom's doors open to a platform to jump into the pool, as well as a patio deck.
At the back of the house there is a storage space, and servant's quarters with a single room and bathroom.
The house has a residential zoning, but has always functioned as a home-office. There are no major structural maintence needs, only cosmetic needs. The inner workings of the house have been regularly maintained over the years since it's initial construction in 1960. It was at the time, the first flat-roofed white house in Pretoria, and was featued in VOGUE Magazine for it's design, architecture and art.
I have inherited the house from my father and have reluctantly decided to part with it in hopes that it can be used by a new owner to its full potential, and if not, so that the property can do well for whoever decides to invest in it.
It is a massive property and house or office, that deserves a large family, or business to enjoy it.

Carol van Tonder, a former artist of the Academy is currently showing a remarkable exhibition. Don't miss out on the chance to purchase some of her uniquely abstract work.
ARTIST STATEMENT
For me, art is a discovery of reality – nothing is more real to me than my own painting.
Spending time observing my surroundings and then capturing the images on camera inspires me to want to explore these images further. The use of photographs gives me a point of reference, somewhere to begin, and a reason for the painting.
I am an abstract expressionist – with a difference. My work is based on perception but expressively applied to become a conceptual interpretation of the subject.
With the pieces on this exhibition I have placed the images within a form. In this way I’m inviting the viewer to focus on the image, within an abstract form.
I work with oils, perhaps adding texture paste or marble dust to the background, all the time visualizing how this will influence the main focal area. Often I allow a painting to change midway into something different from my original intent. This helps me create a personal statement about my subject.
I enjoy the path towards the final outcome – it involves searching, experimenting with paintbrush and palette knife, exploring all the directions, making a mistake and finding a way to fix it, working with the tools until at the right moment the idea finds its place and settles on the canvas. The form, line and colour may appear incidental but ultimately every step is significant, just as if it were painted from a mind map.
My concept is different – it combines abstract with realism. It is incidental. It is what it is. It is what it becomes. It is what you want it to be.

The Beeld's Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn came to view the opening of the GOLD by Ernst de Jong - A celebratory exhibition last Sunday. Here is the article on page 4 of the Beeld from Monday.
English Version
Golden honey, medals and masks, African sun and his Dutch
grandfather's gold mine - often something gold played a role in the life of Ernst de Jong, who directed the design of South Africa's banknotes.
In sports and art and in fact all he packed in his life, he always aimed for gold.
His grandfather, brought the family in 1904 from Amsterdam to South Africa in search of gold.
As a child, pots filled with golden honey by his mother, a beekeeper, stood in his home.
The design of golden Egyptian masks and African golden sunlight was the biggest inspirations in his more than 50 solo exhibitions over the years.
Today [April 3] is a festive exhibition, GOLD, in memory of de Jong's life and work in the M Dawid Ras Gallery which opens in Sandton.
The 81-year-old artist died in February after a brief illness in his
birthplace, Pretoria.
In his career, de Jong won numerous awards for design. He founded the Ernst de Jong Academy of Fine Art in Pretoria and has given design and painting classes at various universities in South Africa, Norway and New York.
Lize Groenewald from the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, opened the exhibition.
Gronewald is writing de Jong's biography.
"Ernst chose the gold theme because he saw the exhibition as the culmination of his life's work." She says he was one of the first South African artists that used real gold in his work. "His interpretation and passion for his work was extraordinary."
Tamara de Jong says her father used to think his work is beautiful and the most important part of his work was the design. "Years later, he realized how much his emotions at that moment affected the colours and design of the piece of art. Yes, his work is beautiful, but it also makes people feel different emotions and that's what he wanted. His work makes people happy. It is gold. "
