: Well done to the hearX Group – whose flagship app, hearScreen, was conceptualised at the University of Pretoria – on being named the second-fastest-growing company in South Africa and the tenth-fastest in Africa by the Financial Times for 2024. hearX is an industry-leading health tech company with a mission to make healthy hearing accessible to everyone, everywhere. The company has become well-known for their flagship solution, hearScreen - a hearing screening app conceptualized at the University of Pretoria - on which hearing screenings can be conducted via Android smartphone.

hearX CEO and UP alum, Nic Klopper, proudly shared that the Financial Times nomination is an extraordinary honour for the company. “It is our second year ranking among the top 125 companies in Africa, up from number 48 to number 10 this year.” He added that the nomination “serves as a testament to our relentless dedication, innovative efforts and the impact of our efforts on a global scale.”

Professor De Wet Swanepoel of UP’s Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, scientific advisor and Chair of the Board at hearX, added: “Amid widespread scepticism, we achieved the seemingly impossible by successfully integrating a clinical hearing test onto the most affordable Android smartphone. With an intuitive user interface, automated testing, and stringent quality controls, this breakthrough ushered in a new era of scalable hearing-loss detection, complemented by cloud-based surveillance and referral capabilities.”
