As the 2026 Faculty of ICT Research Day draws to a close, the programme turns its focus to an important part of the research journey, the research integrity.

Dr Tonderai Muchenje, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of ICT, and Deputy Chair of HREC at TUT, is delivering the Research Integrity Address titled “Responsible Conduct of Research in ICT: Research Integrity, Misconduct and Questionable Research Practices in the Digital Age.”

The day concludes with closing remarks from Dr Tendani Lavhengwa, Section Head: Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation, Department of Informatics, Faculty of ICT at TUT.

From research presentations and technical discussions to conversations around responsible research, today has been a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and advancing research and innovation.

The 2026 Faculty of ICT Research Day continues with more thought-provoking oral and technical presentations, showcasing the depth and diversity of research taking place within the Faculty.

Mash*tishi Phurutsi is presenting “A Framework for Adopting a Hackathon for Enhancing Cloud-Native Software Development Competencies in South African Universities.”

Also presenting is Mr Kanda Tshinu, with “Edge-Optimized DINOv3-YOLOv8-DeepSORT: A Self-Supervised Approach for Real-Time Cross-Dataset Wildlife Surveillance.”

The programme also features a technical presentation by Dr Vianney Kambale from the Faculty of ICT at TUT, titled “Quantum Machine Learning: Promise, Hype, and Open Problems.”

From cloud-native software development and wildlife surveillance to quantum machine learning, today’s presentations demonstrate the wide-ranging research and innovation happening across the Faculty.

Among the presentations is Coster Baloyi, who is presenting “A Hybrid Machine Learning-Based Security Algorithm for Distributed Denial of Service Attacks Detection and Prevention on the Internet of Things.”

Also taking the stage is Elesa Ntuli, presenting “Rethinking Curriculum Design in the Era of Generative AI: Towards Contextually Responsive Learning in South African Higher Education.”

Hey ICT Fam!

The 2026 Faculty of ICT Research Day is underway, bringing together researchers, academics and students to engage with emerging ideas shaping the future of technology and innovation.

The programme opened with a welcome and opening address by Dr AB Pretorius, Assistant Dean: Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology at TUT.

The event also features a keynote address by Dr W Thompson, Data Science Delivery Lead and Director at Trizio Consulting, who is exploring the topic “Agentic AI in the Workplace: The New Leadership Paradox.”

The discussions highlight the evolving role of artificial intelligence in the workplace and the leadership questions emerging as AI systems become increasingly capable of taking action and supporting decision-making.
