TEACHING YOUR CHILD RESPECT

Respect is one of the greatest gifts we can teach our children — but respect is not only taught, it is caught.

Our children are watching how we speak, listen, apologise and treat the people around us.

This week, help your child practise respect by:
💬 Using “please” and “thank you”
👂 Listening when someone else is speaking
🤝 Taking turns and considering others
❤️ Speaking kindly, even when frustrated
🙏 Saying sorry when they have hurt someone
🧸 Taking care of their belongings
🌱 Treating themselves with kindness too

And remember: when your child is disrespectful, you can correct the behaviour without being disrespectful in return.

Instead of:
❌ “You’re being naughty!”

Try:
💛 “In our family, we speak kindly to one another.”

Firm boundaries and kindness can exist together.
✨ Your example is your child’s greatest teacher.

Respect starts at home — in the small, everyday moments that eventually become lifelong habits.

Respect is not just a rule we follow. It is a value we live by and it starts from the inside out.🔁
This week, we're exploring what it truly means to show respect, for ourselves, for others and for the world around us. When children understand that respect is not something we demand but something we choose to give, they begin to develop the kind of character that builds trust, creates belonging and makes every space they enter a little kinder. 🤍

When children learn to lead with respect, they discover that the way they treat others is a direct reflection of who they are. That is a lesson worth carrying for life.

At EQ4Kids, we explored the importance of personal space and what it means to respect our own boundaries and the boundaries of others. Children practised identifying their personal space bubble and learned that honouring boundaries is one of the kindest things we can do for ourselves and the people around us.

TEACHING YOUR CHILD ABOUT PERSONAL SPACE

Personal space is about so much more than standing an arm’s length away. It teaches children that their body belongs to them — while also helping them learn to respect the boundaries of others.

Here are a few simple ways to teach this at home:
🫧 Teach the “personal bubble”
Help your child imagine an invisible bubble around their body that moves with them.

🗣️ Give them words to use
Practise simple phrases like:
“I need more space.”
“No, thank you.”
“I don’t like that.”

👀 Teach them to notice body language
If someone steps backwards, folds their arms or looks uncomfortable, they may be asking for more space.

🤍 Respect their boundaries too
If your child doesn’t want to hug or kiss someone, offer a high-five, wave or handshake instead.

🛡️ Remind them: You are the boss of your own body!
Teach your child that if someone makes them feel uncomfortable or crosses their boundaries, they should always tell a trusted adult.

Teaching personal space helps children develop confidence, empathy, healthy boundaries and important safety skills.

Teaching children about personal space is about so much more than keeping a physical distance. It is about helping them understand that their bodies belong to them, that the space around them matters and that the people around them deserve the same consideration in return.

When children learn to recognise and respect personal boundaries, they become more confident in social situations and more compassionate in their relationships. These are skills that will serve them in the classroom, on the playground and in every relationship they will ever have.

It is important to teach children to respect the personal space of others, but also to protect their own.
