At Inscape, our mission is to empower students to use design as a force for positive change in the world. As we celebrate Women’s Month, we recognise the remarkable journeys of our female students who are doing just that: breaking boundaries, challenging norms, and transforming the world through their creativity and vision. From overcoming personal struggles to discovering their design and artistic identities, these women exemplify our core values of innovation, integrity, and purpose. Their stories reflect the heart of our strategic objectives, equipping students with the tools and knowledge to make a lasting impact in society. Together, they are shaping a future where design uplifts communities, inspires connection, and fosters a sense of belonging for all.
Here are some reflections from Reatile Mokgethwa, Diploma in Interior Design student:
"My journey has been rocky, bumpy, scary and uncertain, but on a brighter note, I feel incredibly blessed and honoured to be entrusted with a heart and vision like mine.
The vision driving my journey, aligned with my higher purpose, is to uplift the quality of life for others in our society. My focus is on restoring morals and principles while making spaces both aesthetically pleasing and functional. The possibilities of what I can offer are limitless—whether it’s designing residential or commercial spaces and much more—thanks to the tools and knowledge I’ve gained from my education.
I genuinely believe there is a way to improve the state of living in South Africa, and I’m committed to starting here. If I can extend this impact further, that would be amazing—truly beautiful.
In essence, my journey is just beginning. I’ve made mistakes, missed opportunities and sometimes blocked blessings along the way. I’m still figuring things out, taking it day by day and I’m on a path of self-discovery and growth to become the person I’m meant to be.
My biggest challenge has been myself—reacting to life in the only ways I’ve known, which hasn’t always been right. If I were to list my struggles, they’d include self-doubt and self-criticism. Sometimes, I make things harder on myself than they need to be, and I wish I didn’t. But trust me when I say I’m genuinely trying to overcome these challenges.
As a designer, my intention has always been to create spaces where people feel they belong and are encouraged to take up space, while also fostering a sense of community."
