A while ago our team at the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria built one of the largest research databases in the world (30 000+ articles). Our goal is to make the best research available to policymakers in the most accessible format.

Then we realised that without an intelligent text classification and search function it'd be difficult for policy makers to find what they're looking for. Enter our in-house team and their development of a really sophisticated machine learning classification tool.

Now we're making another jump... My colleague Vukosi Marivate made the improvement of our ML/AI tool one of the capstone projects for his Master's students. Today is their virtual exhibition and we are blown away by their proposals!

Africa needs development practitioners in government, business and civil society who understand the complexity of developmental challenges and who have the leadership capacities to design and implement the integrated and multidisciplinary Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The University of Pretoria’s Master’s in Development Practice (MDP@UP) addresses this need by delivering graduates with the knowledge, leadership competence and technical skills needed to the implement the SDGs.

The one-year MDP@UP uses a hybrid learning approach, introducing participants to the most relevant development theory and practice. This includes online and face-to-face learning, leadership service learning and case study write- up and analysis. The programme is truly multidisciplinary, and focuses on the social sciences, health sciences, management sciences and natural sciences.

The MDP@UP is hosted by the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership and is Africa’s only programme that focuses on building leadership competence needed to implement the SDGs.
