In recognition of World Rabies Day on 28 September, UP celebrates the efforts of its third-year veterinary students, who took part in a four-day rabies vaccination drive from 15 to 18 September.

Working with academic staff, the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and local communities, the students vaccinated dogs and cats in Mathibestad, Bosplaas and De Wildt.

The initiative forms part of their veterinary professional life module and demonstrates how community engagement and collaboration can make a meaningful difference. Every vaccination brings us one step closer to eradicating this fatal but preventable disease.

This Heritage Month, we're highlighting another fascinating piece of UP's architectural heritage.

The Chemistry and Botany Buildings, with their distinctive yellow face-brick façades, were designed by renowned architect Gerard Moerdyk and reflect the influence of Dutch Modernism, inspired by the Amsterdam School.

Did you know that the bricks used to build these structures came from a brick-yard located where UP's Groenkloof Campus stands today? These locally made Kirkness bricks have helped shape some of the University's most historic buildings.

A lasting reminder of the craftsmanship and architectural influences that form part of UP's rich heritage.

The University of Pretoria (UP)’s Department of Institutional Advancement hosted BankSETA to recognise a partnership that continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of UP students and graduates.

In 2026, BankSETA invested more than R5.2 million in bursary funding for 45 UP students, while a further R4.37 million supported the settlement of historic student debt for 88 students.

Through its continued support, BankSETA is helping to remove financial barriers and giving students the opportunity to complete their studies, pursue employment and build a better future.

How many police officers are actually available to keep South Africans safe at any given moment?

While the South African Police Service employs more than 187,000 people, not all are frontline officers. In this thought-provoking analysis, Prof Christiaan Bezuidenhout from the University of Pretoria explores what happens when shift systems, operational realities and resource constraints are factored into the equation.

His estimate suggests that only around 25,000 operational officers may be on duty nationwide during any given shift, serving a population of more than 63 million people. The article raises important questions about public safety, the growing reliance on private security, and the future of policing in South Africa.
