🌵🔬 Microscopy Meets Adaptation at BRC! 🔬🌵

Our IGCSE 2 Biology learners stepped into the role of plant scientists as they dissected succulent leaves, prepared microscope slides, and investigated the adaptations that make these plants successful xerophytes.

Using their microscopy skills, students examined leaf structures and compared them to those of mesophytes, identifying features that help xerophytes conserve water and survive in dry environments. From thick tissues to specialised adaptations, learners connected what they observed under the microscope to real-world plant survival strategies.

The practical also highlighted an important lesson every biologist learns — creating an ultra-thin section for microscopy is much harder than it looks! Learners quickly discovered that patience, precision, and practice are essential scientific skills.

This lesson encouraged strong metacognition, as students reflected on their practical techniques, evaluated the quality of their slides, and considered how observations support biological theory.

Afrikaans came alive in Stage 2 ! 📚✨

Our learners learned how to change a sentence into the past tense through movement and storytelling. They met the verb bully “het”—who pushes the verb to the back of the sentence! But the verb didn’t want to leave the playground… so it grabbed its “ge-” shield to protect itself. 🛡️😄

The learners acted it out with their whole bodies by moving the verbs themselves, which made the concept so much easier to understand—and so much fun too!

And well... we don't like sitting inside all day 😆
