Getting a spot in university was once Akido Malabela’s hardest battle. “It was a stressful and painful process,” he says. “But I just told myself, ‘I will not give up’.” After several rejections, which is the fate of many in South Africa, Akido eventually cracked the code to receive his acceptance letter. “It was a dream come true,” he says. “I had no one to assist me but I had internet access so I figured out most stuff on my own.” Now Akido is ensuring other people succeed in their quest to pursue higher education, all through his NPO Help a Student. “An organisation for the students, by the students,” is how he describes it.
Akido manages the university application process for students, helping to reduce uncertainty and rejection. Working primarily with Tshwane University of Technology, his team of volunteers also ease the administrative burden for university admissions offices. “We assist students by helping them select a course they qualify for,” Akido says. “We make sure that all the paperwork is sorted before processing the application.” He coaches them in understanding the university prospectus, encourages them to apply for a minimum of three courses to avoid disappointment, and reminds them to never be discouraged by rejection and to always try a different method when re-applying. To date, they’ve helped approximately 800 students.
Having achieved a diploma in photography, Akido now runs a thriving videography and photography business – showing other students the result of perseverance. “Your dreams are valid and you are responsible for that,” he says. “You cannot give up because life is hard and challenging.”
