AARTO Roll-out: 1 July 2026

President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved the commencement of South Africa’s new traffic fines system – the AARTO Act.

Phase 2 of the rollout will commence from 1 July 2026, targeting 62 municipalities.

Phase 3 is expected to commence in the third quarter of the year (October 2026), targeting 151 municipalities.

Phase 4 will see the launch of the demerit system, expected in 2027.

New announcement

The Department of Transport has announced that the new AARTO system will start on 1 July 2026 in 62 municipalities.

The remaining 151 municipalities will be added in the next rollout, which is planned for October to December 2026.

The AARTO system has been operating on a pilot basis in Johannesburg and Tshwane for years.

The launch date for the demerit points system is due to be implemented later.

Enrol now for comprehensive training at the AARTO Training Centre for accredited training by a team of legal and policing experts.
