Call for Papers: Law Faculty Postgraduate Student Conference 2026

The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria is proud to host its 2026 Postgraduate Student Conference on 28 - 29 October 2026 at our Hatfield Campus.

Theme: Uncertainty, Critique and the Future of Knowledge

This conference aims to build a culture of research within the Faculty, bringing together postgraduate scholars and researchers across law, history, politics, philosophy, technology and related fields to debate and collaborate on some of the most pressing questions of our time.

We invite postgraduate law students and interested scholars to explore, among other things, the promises and realities of 30 years of post-apartheid constitutional democracy, the socio-economic and humanitarian crises shaping local and global legal orders, and the rise of Generative AI and digital technologies, along with the challenges these pose for the future of knowledge.

Papers based on ongoing postgraduate research are also encouraged.

Submission details:
- Abstracts of 250–300 words
- Include author name, preferred title, affiliated department (where applicable), and abstract title
- Indicate how your research relates to the conference theme
- Panel submissions welcome (2 - 4 members)

The Centre for Child Law ,department of Private Law is proud to host its 15th Annual Child Law Moot Court Competition 18-19 September 2026 at the University of Pretoria.

This year’s theme tackles online grooming and the sharing of sexually explicit content, with reference to the Sexual Offences Related Matters Act 32 of 2007 (SORMA)

Sixteen universities will compete as aspiring legal practitioners sharpen their advocacy skills, engage in a meaningful arguments, and deepen their understanding of child law.

Constitutional Tribunal welcomes its 2027 judges | UP Law

The Constitutional Tribunal (Student Court) of the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Law recently hosted the swearing-in ceremony of its newly elected 2027 judges, marking the beginning of their term of service to the student community.

Professor Zingaphi Mabe, Guardian of the Constitutional Tribunal, reminded the incoming judges that their service would require patience and humility. She emphasised the importance of listening to students with attention and respect, and allowing the law to guide their decisions.

Also in attendance was Dr Kgadi Mathabathe, Director of Student Affairs, who congratulated the newly elected members of the Constitutional Tribunal and commended those who continue to serve. Dr Mathabathe encouraged students to make the most of leadership opportunities available to them at UP, highlighting the value of experiential learning and the opportunity to develop holistically by learning beyond the classroom.

Incoming Chief Justice Dewald Wessels encouraged the new judges to approach their term with a strong commitment to service. Reflecting on his own journey, he highlighted the role of hard work and dedication in leading him to the position he now holds.

Chief Justice Wessels also expressed his enthusiasm about working with the newly elected judges, noting that each brings unique strengths to the Tribunal. He encouraged them to draw on these strengths as they work together in service of the student community.

Reflecting on the meaning of justice, Chief Justice Wessels posed the question, what is justice? While acknowledging that justice is not always easy to explain, he noted that injustice can be painfully easy to recognise. He encouraged the new judges to let this understanding guide them throughout their term of office.

The swearing-in ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Constitutional Tribunal, giving the incoming judges an opportunity to apply their legal knowledge in practice while serving their fellow students.

UP Law congratulates the newly elected 2027 Constitutional Tribunal judges and wishes them well as they take on their responsibilities in service of the University and its student community.
