17 Yea I tutor in a friendly, relaxed manner.

After 17 years of teaching in schools, I decided to start tutoring English to individual students. I help students who are struggling with the subject at school, as well as those who are coping, but would like to improve their marks. I have vast experience in tutoring both Junior and Senior Primary school English. I find individual tutoring very fulfilling, because I can devote undivided attention to one student at a time, and assist them with their individual problem areas.

Preschool education, both by parents and nursery schools, is crucial. I tutor Grades 1 to 7. That is to help children to catch up to school readiness level and beyond. Even though I don't teach preschool, I am passionate about spreading the message that early education is vital. Children are starting school, not even ready to go to the toilet by themselves or fasten their own shoes, let alone write their own names and recognise numbers.

South African children do not know how to read for understanding (comprehension). Parents, please read to your children, not only pre-schoolers, but after they've started school too. Then chat about what you've just read, to help them understand the topic better.

Give your children a book for Christmas. It will open up a whole new world for them. Far better than some plastic toy that will teach them nothing. πŸ“š

Yesterday, the South African Minister of Education announced the shocking statistics: 81% of South African children in Grade 4 cannot read for meaning. I have found that this is not only the case for children in under-resourced government schools, but applies to many children in private schools too. If not addressed, this will affect the children across all subjects, not only now, but in the higher grades too. It is a crisis which requires urgent attention!
