“Not every young person must work behind a laptop.”
Minister Buti Manamela used the launch of PowerX² to reinforce the importance of occupational skills in building a working South Africa.
The country needs plumbers, electricians, welders, mechanics, technicians and artisans alongside professionals in the digital economy. As AI and automation transform the workplace, South Africa will still need people to build homes, install energy systems and maintain water infrastructure.
“The Skills Revolution must value the hand, the mind and the machine.”

While some learners grow up with computer labs, libraries, coding classes and fast internet, others find themselves sharing the bare minimum. In some schools, learners still share textbooks, classrooms remain overcrowded, and computers simply do not exist. In some communities, learners travel long distances just to access a library. Yet we are expected to compete as though we all began from the same starting line.
The truth is, many students are not behind because they are incapable. They are behind because they were never given the same opportunities to begin with. South Africa says education is a right. For too many learners, opportunity depends on the postcode of their school. But can we really speak about equal education when some learners meet their first computer at university while others have been using them since primary school, asks UFS’ Dr Nasaret Ruswa.
