πŸ’™ MEET THE SPEAKER | NOVA INFORMATION DAY 2026

For many children with special needs, something as routine as brushing teeth or visiting the dentist can be anything but routine.

We’re delighted to welcome Dr Valentina Duncan, Paediatric Dentist, to Nova Information Day 2026.

🦷 DENTISTRY & ORAL HEALTH IN CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Dr Valentina has been practising paediatric dentistry since 2015 and is passionate about making dental care a positive, comfortable and accessible experience for every child.

She’ll be sharing practical guidance on:

πŸͺ₯ Daily oral care and making toothbrushing easier
🦷 Common dental challenges in children with special needs
πŸ’™ Helping children feel safe and comfortable at the dentist
✨ Preventing dental problems before they start
🌟 Supporting good oral health and wellbeing long term

For parents and caregivers who may find dental care challenging, this promises to be an incredibly practical and valuable session.

Because every child deserves dental care that understands their individual needs. πŸ’š

πŸ’™ MEET THE SPEAKER | NOVA INFORMATION DAY 2026

We’re excited to welcome Dr Byron Bowles, Neurologist, to this year’s Nova Information Day!

🧠 SPASTICITY & BOTOX

For many children with neurological conditions, spasticity can affect far more than just movement. It can impact comfort, positioning, daily care, sleep, mobility and overall quality of life.

Dr Bowles will help parents and caregivers better understand what spasticity is, why it happens, and when Botox may be useful as part of its management.

He’ll also discuss the use of Botox for some of the other challenges our families know all too well, including:

πŸ’§ Drooling
🦷 Tooth grinding (bruxism)
πŸ’ͺ Reducing problematic muscle overactivity
🧍 Improving comfort, positioning and function
πŸ’‰ What to expect from Botox treatment

Most importantly, this is an opportunity for parents to hear practical information from a neurologist and better understand the options available for their child.

🌸 What a way to celebrate Spring Day at Nova! 🌸

Yesterday our learners had a VERY exciting visit from Producate Youth Development β€” and there were a few more scales, spikes and slithery creatures at Nova than usual! πŸπŸ¦ŽπŸ°πŸ¦”

A huge thank you to Dudley and his team for such a fun, interactive and educational exotic animal show. Our kids had the opportunity to see, touch and experience these incredible animals up close β€” and the excitement was priceless! πŸ’›

Experiences like these are about so much more than just having fun. They create opportunities for curiosity, communication, learning, sensory exploration and making wonderful memories together.

Thank you for making our Spring Day such a special one! 🌈🌼

πŸ’™ MEET THE SPEAKER | NOVA INFORMATION DAY 2026

Who looks after the caregiver?

When you’re raising a child with additional needs, so much of your time, energy and emotional capacity is focused on your child. Somewhere between appointments, therapies, decisions, worries and everyday life, it can become very easy to forget about you.

We are delighted to welcome Sthembile Mokgoto, Social Worker at Evexia Psychiatric Day Hospital, to Nova Information Day 2026.

🌿 Nurturing Yourself While Caring for Your Differently Abled Child

Sthembile will speak about the very real emotional side of caregiving β€” the exhaustion, overwhelm, grief and guilt that parents may experience, as well as the importance of asking for support, allowing yourself to rest and caring for your own wellbeing.

Her message is a beautiful and important one:

πŸ’š Caring for yourself is also part of caring for your family.

We can’t wait to have her with us.

πŸ’™ MEET THE SPEAKER | NOVA INFORMATION DAY 2026

What happens when a child has the ability to learn β€” but cannot use speech to show us what they know?

We are very excited to introduce Elaine Matchett, Speech Therapist and Audiologist, who will be speaking about a subject at the very heart of Nova:

🌟 Education for Non-Speaking Children

Elaine has a special interest in complex communication needs and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and is passionate about ensuring that every child has access to communication, participation and meaningful education.

As a founding member of Nova, Elaine played an integral role in developing Nova’s educational framework and the daily programme our learners follow today.

During her talk, Elaine will explore how we can create learning environments in which non-speaking children are not simply accommodated, but actively taught, challenged and given opportunities to participate.

She’ll discuss:
πŸ’¬ The role of AAC in learning and participation
πŸ“š Accessing and adapting the curriculum
🧩 Creating truly inclusive learning environments
⭐ Practical strategies that make a difference
πŸ’™ Communication as a fundamental human right

Because not being able to speak does not mean not being able to learn.

And every child deserves the opportunity to show us what they know. πŸ’š
