CAREER TIP #13 | An interview is also your chance to ask questions ❓

At the end of an interview, you will often hear:

“Do you have any questions for us?”

Don’t waste that opportunity by automatically saying, “No, I’m fine.”

Remember: you are also trying to decide whether this is the right workplace for you.

Consider asking:

🔹 What would success in this role look like after the first few months?
🔹 What does a typical day look like?
🔹 What are the biggest challenges someone in this position will face?
🔹 How would you describe the team and working environment?
🔹 What do people who perform well here tend to do differently?

Good questions show that you are thinking beyond simply getting the job.

They also give you information to make a better career decision.

Don’t leave an interview only asking, “Did they like me?”

Also ask yourself:

“Based on what I learned today, is this somewhere I can contribute, grow and do good work?”

CAREER TIP #12 | Choose your references carefully 📞

A good reference can strengthen your application — but only if the person knows your work well enough to speak about it.

Before listing someone as a reference:

🔹 Ask their permission first
🔹 Make sure their contact details are correct
🔹 Choose someone who can genuinely comment on your work, reliability and contribution
🔹 Let them know what type of role you are applying for
🔹 Avoid listing someone simply because they have an impressive title

A strong reference is not the person who knows you best socially.

It is the person who can confidently answer:

“What was this person like to work with?”

And one more important point:

Never let your reference be surprised by the call.

A quick message beforehand is professional and gives them context.

Before your next application, ask yourself:

“If this person gets a call about me tomorrow, are they prepared to represent me well?”

An employer may form an impression of you before they ever meet you.

When you apply for work, check the small things:

🔹 Is your email address professional?
🔹 Does your WhatsApp name clearly identify you?
🔹 Is your profile picture appropriate for a professional contact?
🔹 If you miss a call, do you return it professionally?
🔹 Are your messages polite, clear and easy to understand?

Even a simple message such as:

“Hi, I saw your missed call regarding my application. This is Thandi Mokoena. Please let me know when would be a convenient time for me to return your call.”

creates a very different impression from:

“Who is this?”

Your CV may get you noticed, but employers are also observing how you communicate and conduct yourself.

Before your next application, ask:

“If an employer contacted me today, what impression would I create?”

You cannot always see yourself the way other people experience you.

That is why good feedback matters.

Ask a trusted manager, colleague, lecturer or mentor:

🔹 What do you think I do particularly well?
🔹 Where do you think I could improve?
🔹 What do you rely on me for?
🔹 Is there anything I do that sometimes gets in my own way?

The goal is not to collect compliments.

It is to understand yourself better and become more effective.

You do not have to agree with every piece of feedback you receive — but if you hear the same message repeatedly, pay attention.

Self-awareness grows when you combine what you know about yourself with how others experience you.

This week, ask one person you trust:

“What is one thing I should keep doing, and one thing I should work on?”

Understanding what you are naturally good at is valuable — but it is not enough.

Your strengths still need to be developed and used intentionally.

Ask yourself:

🔹 Where am I already performing well?
🔹 Where could I become even better?
🔹 What feedback do I keep receiving?
🔹 Which habits or behaviours sometimes limit me?
🔹 What could I learn that would make me more effective?

Career development is not only about collecting qualifications.

It is also about becoming more aware of how you work, how others experience you, and how you can improve your contribution.

A strength that is developed can become a real advantage.

A strength that is never developed can sometimes even get in your way.

So this week, don’t only ask:

“What am I good at?”

Ask:

“How am I developing what I already have?”

Your skills are things you have learned to do.

Your strengths are often seen in the way you naturally approach your work.

For example, two people may both know how to manage a customer complaint, but one may naturally build trust and calm people down, while another quickly identifies the problem and finds a practical solution.

Both can be effective — just in different ways.

Ask yourself:
🔹 What seems to come naturally to me?
🔹 What do I consistently do well?
🔹 What do people often ask me for help with?
🔹 What kind of contribution do I tend to make in a team?

Qualifications and experience matter.

But employers are also hiring the person who brings those skills to work every day.

The more you understand your strengths, the easier it becomes to explain:

“This is how I work — and this is the value I can bring.”

It is difficult to explain your value to an employer if you are not clear on it yourself.

Before your next application or interview, ask:

🔹 What am I naturally good at?
🔹 What kind of work gives me energy?
🔹 What do people often rely on me for?
🔹 In what type of environment do I perform at my best?
🔹 Where do I still need to grow?

Self-awareness helps you make better career decisions.

It also helps you answer important interview questions with more confidence — because you are not simply saying what you think the employer wants to hear.

You are explaining who you are, how you work and what you can contribute.

And remember:

The right career is not only about what you can do. It is also about where you are most likely to thrive.

Take a few minutes this week and ask yourself:

“What do I know about myself that should influence the kind of work I choose?”
