Today we were in Cape Town for the Western Cape leg of the provincial information session with Umalusi-accredited independent schools.

The information session provided a platform for Umalusi to communicate developments in accreditation and quality assurance, remind schools of their ongoing responsibilities in maintaining accreditation standards, share good practices, and respond to questions and challenges experienced by accredited institutions.

The next session will be held online with the Northern Cape Umalusi-accredited independent schools.

Each Umalusi accredited institution must have an accreditation certificate that indicates the certificate expiry date.

We have concluded a two-day stakeholder engagement with officials from Provincial Education Departments, the Department of Basic Education, and private assessment bodies on matters related to the registration and accreditation of independent schools.

Thank you to all our stakeholders for a fruitful engagement.

ACCREDITATION | Each Umalusi accredited institution [Independent Schools & Private Colleges] must have an accreditation certificate that indicates the certificate expiry date.

The accreditation certificate is renewed on expiry based on the school’s adherence to the minimum requirements for accreditation as determined through Umalusi’s monitoring processes, and payment of the required accreditation fees.

Today marks the start of a two-day engagement with officials from Provincial Education Departments, the Department of Basic Education, and Private Assessment Bodies under the theme: “One System, One Standard: Aligning Registration and Accreditation Processes to Ensure Consistent Quality Education.”

Discussions will focus on registration of schools, accreditation and current developments, monitoring and certification, among other key topics.

| Umalusi conducts external moderation of exam question papers and accompanying marking guidelines to ensure that quality standards for the NC(V) Level 4 exams are maintained.

In November 2026 exams administered by DHET, Umalusi externally moderated 104 of the 108 NC(V) Level 4 exam question papers.

On 24 August 2026, we hosted a retirement farewell function for Mr Klaus Lettau, Assistant Manager for Evaluation and Accreditation.

Mr Lettau joined Umalusi in 2014 as a contract Subject Specialist for Social Sciences and Natural Sciences and Technology, before being permanently appointed in 2016 as an Assistant Manager in the Evaluation and Accreditation Unit.

Over the years, he has served the organisation with commitment, integrity and professionalism, making a meaningful contribution to Umalusi’s mandate of safeguarding the credibility and quality of education in South Africa.

We thank Mr Lettau for his dedicated service and wish him a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.
