Who needs a spa day when you can get a hoof day? 🐴💅 Our 2nd year equine students got their hands dirty (literally!) at the recent Farriery practical, led by the fabulous Miss Sindiwe Mashinini and presented by guest lecturer and farrier Mr. Jacques Kruger. Shout out to Mr. Kruger for hooking us up with prizes for the best hoof trim - congrats to Nhlalonhle Zindela on taking the win!

One of our third year work integrated learning (WIL) students, Christopher Nyembe, is enjoying working on a prestigious Thoroughbred stud farm in the Western Cape and getting a wide variety of training experiences: everything from the teasing of the mares to tractor driving!

Our first-year students had a fantastic time at Equidome! 🐴 They enjoyed a guided tour of the beautiful facilities and gained valuable hands-on experience in horse handling and grooming.

This enriching experience forms part of their foundational training and helps them develop essential animal care skills.

Many thanks to the awesome yard manager Lindsy Tager and the team at Equidome for hosting us!

Meet one of our star performers:

My name is Hilda, 28, I graduated from TUT Equine Science 2022. As a TUT student I did my Work Integrated Learning at Klawervlei Thoroughbred stud farm in the Western Cape where I stayed on as a stud assistant after graduation.

I was then selected to go to Ireland to do the Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Management Course; all thanks to my Diploma in Equine Sciences and the background it has given me into breeding and Equine Veterinary practices.

I graduated from the Irish National stud with a Veterinary award and then returned to South Africa to work for one last breeding season with Klawervlei stud.

Since then I've worked as the stud Manager at Rathmor stud, and currently I am the Assistant stud Manager at Stonehill stud.

Mrs. Anel Naude, our Anatomy lecturer, recently hosted a very informative hands-on Anatomy practical for the first year Equine Science students in collaboration with the Onderstepoort Anatomy Department.

Students had lots of fun learning about the inner workings of the Equine. Looking good there, first years!

TUT Equine Science students enjoying an outreach project in Bela-Bela and attending to the donkeys. What a great experience learning about not just horses but other Equine species. Practical learning is an important component in the course. We like to give our students the opportunity to gain hands on experience
