As South African Heritage Publishers and the South African National Lexicography Units have a keen interest in language matters, we felt we should make followers aware of an important Kiswahili language event taking place at UNISA on Friday – World Kiswahili day.



The invitation reads as follows:



Greetings from Swahili Afrika.



On behalf of Swahili Afrika, in partnership with the University of South Africa (UNISA) and the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, we are pleased to invite you to participate as a distinguished panelist at World Kiswahili Language Day 2026 (WKLD2026), scheduled for Friday, 31 July 2026 at the University of South Africa (UNISA), Pretoria, South Africa. World Kiswahili Language Day is a Pan-African platform dedicated to promoting Kiswahili as a language of diplomacy, trade, culture, education, innovation, and African unity.



The 2026 edition will be hosted under the theme:



“Kiswahili: The Language of Diplomacy, Trade, Culture and African Unity” with the tagline:

“Neno Letu, Soko Letu, Sauti Yetu, Afrika Yetu”

(Our Word, Our Market, Our Voice, Our Africa)

This landmark event will bring together diplomatic missions, policymakers, academics, researchers, students, development partners, business leaders, technology experts, media, and cultural practitioners from across Africa and beyond.

The purpose of the programme is to create meaningful dialogue around the growing strategic role of Kiswahili in advancing continental integration, economic transformation, cultural diplomacy, and African-led development.

The 5th Annual Pan African Commemoration of World Kiswahili Language Day was not the finish line. It was the starting line.

_”Njia ya kwenda mbali ni kuanza.”_ The way to go far is to start.
Nyerere, Nkrumah, Mandela and others started without a map. They started with belief.

Today we start too. For trade, for education, for unity. For a common African language.

We may not see the destination, but we are moving.

The College of Human Sciences invites you to join the celebration of the 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗞𝗶𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆.

Although World Kiswahili Language Day is observed annually on 7 July, Unisa will commemorate the occasion on 𝟯𝟭 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲. UNESCO proclaimed the day to promote multilingualism, cultural diversity, and the global use of the Kiswahili language.
