🌿Harvesting Fun at The High School! 🌿

🥜Every May, our students get to experience the joy and excitement of helping with the annual pecan nut harvest on our beautiful organic farm. Our school offers a unique blend of learning and hands-on experiences that our students absolutely love.

😃This year's harvest was an incredible adventure! The children had a blast climbing the trees, shaking the branches, and using tall sticks to knock the nuts down. It's a thrilling experience, combining teamwork, physical activity, and a deep connection with nature.

🍰Once the nuts were on the ground, the students gathered them up and placed them in crates. They are then taken away to be carefully shelled by hand. These delicious nuts will soon make their way to Rosemary Hill Farm, where they'll be for sale in the farm shop and also used in the homemade muesli, brownies, and carrot cakes throughout the year.

💪We're so proud of our students for their hard work and enthusiasm. This annual tradition not only provides valuable lessons about sustainable farming and the importance of organic produce but also fosters a sense of community and accomplishment.

📚Today, we shine the spotlight on the heart and soul of our school, Principal Hayley Davis! With a passion for teaching that dates back to her childhood days of lining up teddies for lessons (when her younger brothers weren’t available, of course!), Hayley’s journey in education has been nothing short of inspiring.

🏫Sixteen years ago, her dream of becoming a teacher blossomed into reality at The Waldorf School, where she spent a decade as a dedicated class teacher, guiding two groups through to Grade 6 before transitioning into a leadership role. Now, as the Academic Manager of the Waldorf School and Principal of The High School at Rosemary Hill, Hayley finds immense fulfillment in her role, leading a dynamic team of educators and playing a vital role in the growth of our school from infancy to Grade 12.

💚But Hayley’s dedication extends beyond the classroom. As a devoted mom to two lively boys, three dogs, a cat, and a school of fish, she understands the importance of balancing work and family life. In her free time, she loves embarking on family adventures and exploring the breathtaking landscapes of our beautiful country, with the Drakensberg holding a special place in her heart.

🥇Last year, Isabella achieved something truly extraordinary—she soared to the top of South Africa’s Dance Sport scene, clinching the coveted first place in Tap Dancing in her age group! Her talent and hard work alongside her dance partner, Amirah, also earned them first place in the country for their dynamic tap duo. Their dedication to the art form, nurtured over nine years of dancing together, shines through in every step they take.

👯‍But the story doesn’t end there! Isabella and Amirah proudly represented our beautiful country on the global stage at The Tap IDO World Championship in Germany, showcasing their incredible skills and spreading the joy of dance to audiences worldwide. 🌍

💃Isabella’s journey is a testament to her passion, hard work, and the unwavering support of her family, including her grandparents who are among the founding members of The Kindergarten and The Waldorf School community.

✨Teacher Tuesday! Meet our extraordinary Grade 8 Guardian, Virashni Bharuth! ✨
As the head of Student Affairs and Teacher Mentorship, she brings a wealth of experience and passion to our school community.

📚 Virashni’s educational journey began in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, where she studied Drama, English, and Psychology at the University of Durban-Westville. 🎭📖 Her love for literature led her to become a teacher, and she taught in private IEB schools in Johannesburg before embarking on a 14-year adventure in developing herself as an educator at Roseway Waldorf School in KZN.

🇦🇪 An adventurous spirit, Virashni ventured to the UAE, seeking opportunities in education. However, she soon realized the limitations on creative freedom in the educational system there.

🇿🇦 Her path eventually led her back to South Africa, where she found her home at Stellenbosch Waldorf School. Here, she found her passion for experiential teaching reignited, inspiring her to continue nurturing young minds in an environment that values innovation and critical thinking. Thereafter, she once again returned to Roseway Waldorf School, this time as a Drama and Religion Studies teacher.

💜 A true pioneer at heart, Virashni was captivated by the ideals that The High School is striving for - seeing it as an opportunity to deepen her connection to the Waldorf movement where she also serves as a federation council member.

💡 With expertise in both IEB and Waldorf education, The High School’s blend was a perfect fit for Virashni.

🌱 Beyond education, she loves woodworking, metalworking, and gardening. Virashni’s also a book and movie enthusiast! 🍿🎬

🧐 Studying practical philosophy and Plato, Virashni contributes to Waldorf 360, training teachers in the Asia Pacific.

🏕️ When not in the classroom, she enjoys hiking and glamping, and runs self-development retreats for teens and adults.

Our class 10s recently participated in a study retreat right here on Rosemary Hill Farm.

Whilst some time was spent on revising their physical science curriculum for the year (using their heads), they also spent significant time on diving inside themselves and looking inward (heart work). This, we feel, is very important for them to prepare for the next two years of gruelling academics and a much faster pace as they approach their Matric year.

Apart from their study sessions, which included learning more about different learning types and study methods and delving into the meaning of Homer's 'The Odyssey', they also strengthened their ties and cooked their meals together, faced a wall at The Climbing Barn and visited the impressive The Javett Art Centre at UP to view their latest exhibition.

Our class 10s spent their mornings in the Rosemary Hill Farm kitchen this past week, getting supervised work experience in the hot kitchen, pastry section, waitering in the dining room and shaking it like baristas.

What an incredible week it was! As the semester tests came to an end, our learners got busy with an array of practical experiences that left them inspired and equipped with new skills. From whipping up delicious dishes in the class 8 cooking practical to constructing a new horizontal climbing wall on The Waldorf School's playground, our students took part with heart and soul.

But the fun didn't stop there! Each day, they rallied together for the Amazing POG Race. It put their teamwork, wit and stamina to the test. We're thrilled to announce that the unstoppable Phoenix Inc team emerged as the ultimate champions and proudly carried the coveted cup home!
