Minecraft Architecture: What Architects Can Learn From a Video Game.
For those who aren't familiar with the architectural game (or who don't have school-age children), Minecraft allows users to build houses, cities, underground bunkers, and whole virtual worlds using 3D textured cubes that represent different materials.
The world-building platform has also garnered the attention of architects and designers. Could a video game actually change the way architecture is taught and practiced?
Whilst the architects of today grew up playing with LEGO, there is no doubt the next generation will have played Minecraft. It is not just a game. It’s a CAD tool, and as such it is the most widely used one in the world.
In Minecraft survival is key, players have to explore and mine to find stronger materials and build more elaborate housing. Minecraft is about creativity, and this is reflected in each individual players world. From paintings, swimming pools, gardens and farms, to community projects like hospitals, bakeries, rollercoasters and other entertainment projects to expand the players world.
The emphasis on and capability for real-time collaboration are also critical elements. Online sharing is a trademark of the millennial generation and reminiscent of current architectural tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), which allows designers, clients, and end users to exchange performance information to a much finer degree than ever before.
