Sharing in the sadness of the Schutte family as we send our condolences with the passing of their son, Luan. Words can not express how sorry we are for your loss and we send healing and comforting prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Luan was a wonderfully bright child with such a warm smile, he will be remembered as being such a blessing to Mr Lourenz in his classroom and will be very sorely missed.

Covid-19 brought immense pain, suffering and an in-depth introspection into all of our lives. It scaffolded levels of uncertainty that many people have rarely encountered in their life of work and play. We have been plunged into various intellectual, economic, and social challenges. What possible good can come of this new life experience?

The one certainty that stands out is that the way in which we educate our children needs to change.
To have a point of reference we need to avoid the same mistakes made through previous leadership and management. At institutions of learning we have to develop future leaders with an open mind, think on their feet and take action within a value system. This will keep us responsible and accountable for our children in education.

We need to prepare the next generation of leaders for a challenging world, where the voice of individuals needs to be recognised and where the communities need to be consulted in an organised and structured manner. Let us prepare the learners in front of us to face challenges and the consequences thereof.
We experienced that we can only do today what is necessary for today. Taking smaller steps at a time become more relevant as 10-year management plans become impossible.

It is essential that schools develop health, wellbeing and educational plans for the future academic year to combat the negative effects of Covid-19. School leaders who are willing to show strategic foresight, will need to look deeper into these implications for school education. Schools are usually prepared for the next academic year, but are our schools prepared for future incidents of a similar nature?

Parents also need to have a strong awareness of the experience of teaching and learning provided for their children. Parents need to re-consider why schools exist as the private sector and home schooling in various forms now have a very constructive role to play in schooling in general.

The “what” taught in the curricula is knowledge-learning, where mathematics or history or geography are taught in pockets disconnected from one another. This does not reflect the interdependent and integrated world we are living in. This needs to be debated at school forums where parents are included to have a balanced outcome for the school in a community.

How our children will be educated requires education specialists, parents and especially teachers who have a strong concern for the education of children in developing a curriculum that has a unique culture for teaching and learning. Let our parents’ contribution to their community be in what is required for the career pathing of their children.

The "where", has become challenging as contemplated over the past few years. Moving forward with technology in our homes has become easier on the one hand but more research is required on what is” lost” without having full face-to-face contact in the classroom.
Schools thinking “outside the box” might very well come to realise that the whole concept of having a school in “buildings” is no longer necessary. Infrastructure can be re-thought as a community hub for multi-purpose use may be a solution. Where specialist space is required, such as chemistry labs, drone-labs or technology rooms, which can be rented in a community. Developing buildings has a present backlog and temporary classrooms is in many ways unpractical.

The reality is, digital teaching and learning in combination with face-to-face engagement needs more time to phase in. The approaches to teaching and learning such as creativity, thinking and research skills, where innovation becomes a norm in the community, needs to be explored.

The culture of learning, geography, history, technology and mathematics should be integrated and interactive to examine the past in our continuously changing world and “inventing” a new tomorrow.

Schools need to adapt and be more flexible to cater for the diversity of needs for the youth of tomorrow. The contribution of the youth to their education must never be underestimated. The concept may seem farfetched, but the role of the community needs to be engaged into a fresh re-think as to where education should take place.

Structuring our schools to a four-day school with theme-based projects may be a solution to deal with overpopulated schools. One of the challenges experienced is that parents are required to be part of the labour force, hence afterschool centres may experience an overflow of learners and/or transporting children from point A to B becomes a management burden.

Change is on our doorstep! It is time to re-imagine, re-consider, re-think and re-boot how the future can be designed and implemented by the present world experience of education.

Education and the implementation of educational values is central to the lives of every human being and their relevant cultures.
Covid-19 has changed the world of work and play. Many households have become complex, schools have become challenging, and communities may feel detached. Covid-19 has created a world of anxiety, fear, uncertainty, and separation in many families. For some it means having to take care of themselves in times of need.

But beyond the negative, some good has also come out of this re-thinking experience: a better understanding of education as a whole, navigating personality differences in our families, recognising that our school environment requires stakeholder involvement as well as the importance of communities investing in their children’s education.

The importance of education and educational values surfaced during these seemingly dark and troubled times, and simultaneously we are experiencing a wealth of kindness and tolerance amongst cultures.

The benefits of home schooling are innumerable, children are remarkable and as they develop we see that each one has a unique mixture of personality, interests and aptitudes. Education should not be a one-size-fits-all, education should be flexible and customizable to bring the best out of your children.

Although parents see these benefits, the idea of taking on their child's tuition may seem daunting and that is where EduPhoenix comes in.

We provide support for parents/guardians of home schooled children by offering an ideal environment, smaller classes and flexible learning.
