Darian Nolan — Class of 1994

Long before he was standing before the High Court of South Africa, Darian Nolan was walking the corridors of Potchefstroom High School for Boys, where he matriculated with the Class of 1994 (1990–1994). Like every boy who passes through College, he carries the school motto with him — Iustorum Semita Lux Splendens, "The path of the righteous is a shining light" — and by all accounts he has kept that path firmly in the commercial and legal arena.

From College grounds to the courtroom After leaving College, Darian read for his BProc and LLB at the University of Pretoria, later adding an H Dip Tax through UNISA. He was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2002 and has been a member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces, now the Legal Practice Council, ever since. Today he is the founding Director and Shareholder of Nolans Incorporated, a principal-led commercial and labour law firm based in Benoni, Gauteng, serving clients nationally — the kind of "give it everything you've got" enterprise that reflects the Potch Boys way.

What he does now? Darian runs a busy commercial department alongside his litigation and labour practice, handling bespoke contract drafting, business acquisitions and disposals, compliance and risk advisory, and litigation before the High Court, Labour Court, CCMA and bargaining councils. Earlier in his career he even managed a multi-million-Rand cross-border arbitration on behalf of Shaft Sinkers.

Carrying the Old Mooi spirit The Potchefstroom College Old Boys' Society — established in Granton House on 25 November 1911 and affectionately known as "The Old Moois" — exists precisely to celebrate men like Darian, who have taken the foundation laid on the fields and in the classrooms of College and built distinguished careers. A proud English/Afrikaans-speaking Old Boy of the Class of '94, he stands as another example of College sending "a gentleman into the world.

J. TOD SUTTIE —A year after the Second Anglo Boer War ended (1902)the firm J TOD SUTTIE was opened selling primarily gentleman’s cloths and sporting goods (1903). Potchefstroom College (renamed Potch Boys High in 1911) was founded in 1905. Soon after J Tod Suttie began to supply “College equipment” ( ties, blazers, caps, badges, jerseys etc). This popular and historic firm closed its doors for the final time in February 1976, an association of 70 years with College. Since 1910 the firm had been housed in the same premises which had subsequently been modernized. When College was founded in 1905 the school grounds weren’t enclosed so no games were arranged during the first term. However that difficulty was overcome through the kindness and energy of Mr and Mrs J Tod Suttie who organized a concert on behalf of the Potchefstroom College Recreation Trust. By this means and with the generous financial support of many townspeople a ground was made fit for football. When the cricket season of 1907-08 ended on behalf of J Tod Suttie Mr Suttie presented a cricket bat for the player with the Best Improvement during the Season- awarded to Chittenden. In 1913 J Tod Suttie was the first to have a telephone installed before leaving to open a branch in Bulawayo. By 1951 the shops phone number was still number 1. Teachers at the time when corporal punishment was still the norm could buy their canes from J Tod Suttie. Mr Arthur A Betts who had joined the firm 6 years earlier then took over the management. After World War Two ended (1945) Mr Betts was joined by his son Billy, who had been awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field during the Italian campaign. Billy took over management of the firm in 1965 with his eldest son John. 3 years later John left to study architecture. Arthur Betts senior retired from active business in 1969, the year Billy Bett’s youngest son Arthur joined the firm after completing his military service. Mr Arthur Betts senior passed away at the ripe old age of 92 years in 1973, his wife having predeceased him a year previously. After 72 years of service to the community of Potchefstroom the doors of J Tod Suttie were finally closed in February 1976. ( Basil Kletz)

Terence Lambert passed away this morning ( Sunday 2nd August) at 6.30am. Lammies grew up in Potch - a dayboy 1961-65 he was 79 years old, one of 3 brothers, the eldest Jimmy died this past December, David many years ago from cancer. RIP Lammies you will be sadly missed by all those who knew you- sincere condolences to Jimmys widow Elaine, family and friends. -Basil Kletz

Dear friends -please keep Terrence “Lammies” Lambert ( Dayboy 1961-65) in your thoughts and prayers as he has been kept sedated, possibly in a coma for the past 8 weeks. One of 3 brothers to have attended Potch Boys High - the youngest David ( Matric 1971) passed away a number years ago, the eldest Jimmy (1956-60) 7 months ago. Lammies best mate Jack Perel passed away in 2012 ( I may be slightly out with the years). —Basil Kletz

Allan Boardman, proud matriculant of 1975, is a Chartered Accountant who cut his teeth at Deloitte Cape Town before heading north to the UK, where he's spent the past 45+ years advising the world's biggest names — think Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, KPMG, PwC, GSK, AXA, Marks & Spencer and the London Stock Exchange.

Today he's the founder of CyberAdvisor.London, a globally sought-after voice on cybersecurity, IT governance and AI risk — having delivered workshops to over 1,000 professionals in 15 countries since April 2024 alone.
