The North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Social Sciences played host to the successful Planetary Utilisation of Sustainability Strategies (PLUS) Southern African Regional Conference from 11 to 13 September at its Mahikeng Campus.
The conference, themed "Land, Landscape, Local Knowledge, and the Pursuit of Sustainable Ontologies," brought together experts, postgraduate students, and thought leaders to discuss pressing issues related to sustainability.
PLUS is a network concerned with aspects of sustainability and is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service. It consists of nine universities in Southern Africa – including the NWU – Latin America and Germany.

A researcher of the North-West University (NWU) has made the institution proud by being acknowledged as one of the top three researchers in the humanities and social sciences at the recent South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA)*.
Prof. Shan Simmonds was the second runner-up in this category for young researchers under the age of forty. She received the South African Distinguished Young Women in Science Award in Durban on 8 September. This award is given for outstanding contributions in advancing science and building knowledge in specific areas of research.
She is currently a full professor of Curriculum Studies and a sub-area leader of the Edu-HRight (Education and Human Rights in Diversity) research unit.
“My research rises to the challenges facing transformation in higher education by engaging in complicated curriculum conversations. Receiving recognition as the second runner-up for the South African Distinguished Young Women in Science Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) is testimony to my scholarly activism with respect to the ever-changing and continuously challenging intellectual world of Curriculum Studies,” says Prof. Shan.

We closed off Day #1 of our Research Week with the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. The competition celebrates the exciting research conducted by Master's and PhD students. The 3MT cultivates students' academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports your capacity to effectively explain your research in three minutes in a language appropriate to an intelligent but non-expert audience.
