NWU - North-West University

The North-West University joined business leaders, government, innovators and investors at the Future of Jobs Summit 2026 to contribute to discussions on South Africa's Future of Jobs Roadmap and the industries expected to drive economic growth and employment in the years ahead.

As part of a programme that brought together organisations such as SAP, ABSA, Telkom, MTN, Afrika Tikkun, YES and GIFS, NWU Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka, delivered a keynote address on how the University is creating career pathways and job opportunities for young South Africans.

The summit also provided a valuable platform to strengthen relationships with strategic partners and explore new opportunities for collaboration in areas that will shape the future economy, including digital technologies, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, advanced manufacturing, energy, mining and innovation.

Graduate employability remains a strategic priority for NWU. Through purposeful partnerships, industry engagement and future-focused academic programmes, the University continues to equip graduates with the skills, experience and global outlook needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving world of work.

Congratulations to Coach Nkululeko Malgas and Buhle “The Fixer” July on their national appointments for at the 2026 Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games in Gaborone, Botswana.

Coach Malgas has been entrusted with leading the South African team, while Buhle July will serve as the team physiotherapist. A true reflection of the excellence, leadership and professionalism cultivated at NWU.

These appointments not only highlight their dedication to university sports, but also reinforce NWU’s commitment to producing excellence both on and off the field. Your passion, hard work and impact continue to inspire the next generation of NWU Eagles.

An indigenous plant long used in traditional medicine is now central to pioneering cancer research at the NWU. 💜

Researchers investigating Lessertia frutescens (cancer bush) have discovered promising activity against multiple cancer types, including drug-resistant forms.
This work underscores the value of indigenous knowledge, local innovation and homegrown scientific discovery and could lead to more accessible, locally developed treatment options in the future.

Prof. Gilbert Motsaathebe, professor of communication and deputy dean for teaching and learning in the Faculty of Humanities at the NWU, recently delivered an online guest lecture hosted by Koladaisi University in Nigeria.

His presentation explored how organisations can navigate the evolving digital landscape through effective corporate communication management strategies, while strengthening stakeholder trust and protecting organisational reputation in an increasingly connected world.

The engagement formed part of ongoing academic collaboration and knowledge exchange across African universities.

At the NWU, we’re proud to back talent wherever we find it. This week we presented a R20 000 contribution at a special cheque-handover ceremony at his school to support Dewald as he represents South Africa at the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship 2026 in Italy.

Dewald, you are a testament to the exceptional talent nurtured in our communities. The board is yours, go make us proud! 🇿🇦

For some, success is solely personal. For NWU alumnus Lentletse Mothusi, it means lifting others up. 💜

Through community outreach, youth empowerment programs, mentoring and using dance and creative expression, Lentletse is turning her skills, voice and passion into real change.
A law graduate, candidate attorney, mentor and community advocate, her journey embodies the purpose, leadership and impact that define the NWU community.
