Research by Dr Matsepiso Jeminah Chalatse explores the realities facing SMEs in Lesotho and the regulatory barriers that can make formalisation and growth more difficult.

Drawing on stakeholder perspectives from Maseru, Berea, Leribe and Mafeteng, the study identifies challenges around taxation, licensing, finance and a wider gap between policy intentions and the realities businesses experience on the ground.
The findings call for a simpler, more inclusive environment that helps entrepreneurs move from survival towards sustainable growth.

Research from the NWU Business School explores how traditional leadership could help rural communities identify, develop and retain local skills and knowledge.

Based on engagement with traditional leaders, council members and government practitioners across eight villages in the North-West Province, the study proposes a framework built around four areas: talent search, development, deployment and sustainability.

Its message is rooted in a powerful Setswana principle: 𝘮𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘨𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘶 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘢 - progress is sustained when people and institutions help one another.

A development economist and researcher, Dr Azunna brings more than a decade of experience across higher education, civil society and humanitarian organisations, with a strong focus on evidence-based policy, inclusive economic development, youth development, livelihoods and community engagement.

But does it tell us enough?

Research by Dr Debapriyo Nag, Prof Christo Bisschoff and Prof Christoff Botha examined performance across private secondary schools in KwaZulu-Natal and found that academic results are only part of the picture.

Student engagement, organisational culture, teacher development, leadership and resources all help shape how a school performs.

One finding stood out: learner preparation and engagement emerged as an area requiring particular attention.

The research offers school leaders a practical way to look beyond examination results and understand the wider factors influencing educational performance.
