Every few days we will let you know about one of our special succulents simply for the sake of education. Succulents are quite simply the most magical plants, they never fail to surprise and delight. Todays special plant is Aloe brevifolia, the short-leaved aloe, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asphodelaceae. It is a tiny, compact, blue-green evergreen succulent perennial, that is native to the Western Cape. Though only 10 cm in height the Kleinaalwyn tends to sprout suckers from its sides that become new rosettes. Consequently, it can form large clumps. The leaves are short and fat and edged with soft, harmless, white teeth. In November it sends up a (relatively) tall inflorescence with bright red flowers.
Cultivation

This dwarf aloe is increasingly popular as an ornamental plant for pots and rockeries. In cultivation it should be planted in a reasonably sunny position, in well-drained soil. It requires only moderate watering and should not be kept perpetually damp. It should be remembered that it is adapted to the Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape, with its winter rainfall regime. It can be propagated easily by simply removing and replanting the branching suckers.

It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

The Moringa journey all started with one of these. A dear friend who knew I was an avid collector of seeds and "stuff" brought me one of these that she had collected on her travels, it was a gorgeous HUGE thick pod, I had no idea what it was and started researching, that is where I discovered the amazing MORINGA TREE. I was blown away by the myriad of benefits this tree has and became a little obsessed about finding out as much as I could about it, all the while nurturing the fat little seeds I had harvested from my pod. Lo and behold a few little trees were born and they grew and they grew and they grew at a rapid speed and the produced the most sublime orchid like little flower with scents of orange blossom and jasmine and those grew into more pods and the rest as they say is history. I am now able to share this tree with EVERYONE, be it a well established sapling or fresh leaves for cooking or honey infused with super healthful flowers or moringa infused organic apple cider "shrub" which is much like a cordial but on steroids and really rather delicious with a sparkling water over ice.

After many years of hard work we are a seedling sprout away from being able to offer an array of well loved and nurtured succulents and established moringa trees.
