Attending the Eastcape Midlands TVET College (EMC) Business Breakfast at the Boardwalk Convention Centre this morning has reinforced one important message: the future of skills development depends on stronger partnerships between education, industry and government.

Some of my key takeaways:
• The rapid advancement of automation, artificial intelligence and digital transformation requires South Africa to rethink how we prepare people for work.
• TVET Colleges are evolving from simply supplying graduates to becoming strategic partners that help industry identify future skills needs and co-design solutions.
• Germany's dual training model reminds us that employers should not wait for graduates—they must actively shape the education system by working alongside colleges.
• South Africa is redesigning occupational qualifications to integrate workplace training with classroom learning, making graduates more work-ready.
• The Department of Higher Education and Training is introducing funding mechanisms that reduce the financial burden on employers who take apprentices, creating greater incentives for industry participation.
• Eastcape Midlands College is positioning itself as an innovation partner through its 4IR Centre, Learning Factory, modern trade workshops, renewable energy facilities and industry-responsive occupational programmes.

Perhaps the most thought-provoking statement of the morning came from DHET Chief Director Mr Sabelo Buthelezi:

"There is no revolution without activists. If there needs to be a skills revolution in South Africa, then we need activists."

This resonates deeply. Solving youth unemployment, responding to technological disruption, supporting the green economy, and preparing for industries such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and the ocean economy cannot be left to government alone.

Collaboration is no longer optional—it is essential.
