I love Montessori Maths ❤️

🔢 Why does Montessori math begin with concrete materials instead of counting?

Understanding numbers is so much more than memorizing sequences. Montessori Math builds meaning behind the numbers and quantities from the ground up.

In a Montessori environment, children first explore math through tactile tools like number rods, golden beads, and spindle boxes. These materials allow them to physically experience quantity, place value, and operations before ever seeing a numeral or symbol.

This hands-on foundation helps children internalize mathematical relationships, rather than simply reciting facts.

As their confidence grows, so does their ability to move from concrete experiences to abstract thinking. Symbols and equations become meaningful because they’re rooted in something real. It’s a developmental progression—one that respects how children naturally learn.

Montessori math isn’t only about coming to the right answer. It’s about nurturing logical thinking, independence, and a lifelong love of learning. 🌱

✏️ Why Montessori Teaches Writing Before Reading — And Why It Works

In traditional schools, children are typically taught to read first, memorizing letters, decoding words, and following structured lessons. But Montessori flips the script: children write before they read. And it’s not just different, it’s brilliant 🌟

Dr. Montessori observed that children have a keen interest in writing long before they are interested in or have the developmental capacity to read.

Spoken or oral language develops first, spontaneously in the subconscious, with the child absorbing the sounds and patterns of speech in his environment.

Writing is like speaking: it is the process of sharing one’s thoughts and feelings

Children begin writing in the Montessori classroom through the composition of words using the Large Movable Alphabet. This is not reading; it is word construction and the beginning of creative writing✍️

Montessori observed that this phenomenon generally occurs before reading, and she fashioned a writing program to concretely prepare the child for the next order of language — reading.

Reading is much more complex and abstract than writing. Reading is a silent form of communication that involves being able to interpret the thoughts of others.

Let’s rethink how we teach reading. Sometimes, the best way to understand a word… is to write it first. 💬
