On 1 February 1919, the Mackay School in North End, Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), officially moved into its first purpose-built permanent school building.

Historical Timeline
Early Years (pre-1911): The school originally operated as the Adderley Street Primary School.
Naming (1911): It was renamed Mackay School while functioning out of the North End Library Hall (located on the triangular plot between Mount Road and Crawford Street).
Transition (1914): Due to growth, the school moved to temporary premises while its permanent home was under construction.
Permanent Home (1919): On February 1, students and staff relocated to the "proper school" building.

Key Figures & Architecture
John Mackay: The school was named in honour of this local figure, who also has a bridge named after him in the Sundays River area.
Architects: The 1919 building was designed by the firm Smith, Sons and Dewar.
North End Library Hall: Even after the school moved, the hall remained a significant landmark; it was extended in 1927 by the same architectural firm to serve the growing community.

Today, the North End area has transitioned from a primarily residential hub to a commercial and industrial zone, with many former school buildings now serving as community centres or business premises.
