Taking opportunities to learners beyond the classroom!

National Science Week 2026 brought learners and teachers from more than 15 high schools in the Peddie area together at Ntyatyambo Primary School, giving Grade 8–11 learners the opportunity to explore their future study and career options.

The Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences was proud to once again be part of this important initiative, helping prospective students understand what Mandela University has to offer and how to get there. Learners received guidance on choosing Grade 10 subjects based on their interests and abilities, calculating their Applicant Score (AS), navigating the prospectus, understanding the application process and exploring NSFAS opportunities and qualifications offered by the Faculty.

For learners in rural communities, access to this kind of career and university information can make a real difference. It’s about opening doors, sharing opportunities and ensuring that where a learner comes from doesn’t determine where they can go. 🌱🎓

A big thank you to Phatu Monakali and Vuyolwethu Nyathi, who represented the Faculty at this exciting and meaningful event.

Universities have a role to play in shaping a more sustainable future 🌍

In a recent opinion piece published in The Herald, Dr Laura Novienyo Abla Amoah from the Department of Development Studies at Nelson Mandela University looks at why universities need to move beyond simply discussing climate change and take a more active role in driving climate action.

Dr Amoah highlights how universities can use their campuses as spaces for practical change, while using research, teaching and partnerships with communities, government and industry to develop solutions that respond to the realities of climate change in South Africa.

From equipping students with the skills to address environmental challenges, to turning research into action and creating more sustainable campus practices, universities have an opportunity to lead by example.

As South Africa continues to face the growing impacts of climate change, the question is no longer just what we know about the problem, but “what we are doing about it”🌱

✈️ Learning beyond the classroom!

46 NMU Tourism students recently visited Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport for an educational tour, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the different teams and operations that keep the airport running.

From presentations and interactive exhibition stands with ACSA, Europcar, South African Airways, Airport Safety and Security, and the Terminal and Landside teams, to exploring different areas of the airport and even getting onto the aircraft side — it was a day full of learning and new experiences! 👏

The visit also marked the beginning of a stronger partnership between the Tourism Department, Tourism Society and ACSA, with exciting possibilities for WIL opportunities, internships and future job placements for NMU students. The airport will also host an educational tour for students annually.

A heartfelt congratulations to Professor Felix Amoah on the delivery of his inaugural lecture, “Navigating Evolving Consumer Expectations in a Disruptive Marketing Ecosystem.” 👏

Professor Amoah shared valuable insights into how consumer expectations continue to evolve in an increasingly digital and disruptive world, and what this means for the future of marketing. His lecture reflected years of research, experience and a passion for understanding the ever-changing relationship between businesses and consumers.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate this important milestone with Professor Amoah. Your dedication to teaching, research and the Marketing Management discipline continues to inspire both colleagues and students, and we look forward to seeing your impact continue to grow.

That’s a wrap on Learning & Teaching Week 2026! 👏

Day 3 brought the week to a close with more engaging discussions on teaching, learning and building a more human-centred approach to higher education. One of the standout moments was the Human Library, where participants shared their experiences and perspectives through open conversations, reminding us of the value of listening, understanding and learning from one another.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, presented and contributed throughout the week. Here’s to taking these conversations forward and continuing to make a positive impact in our classrooms and beyond.

✨ Day 1 of Learning & Teaching Week! ✨

The Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences joined colleagues and students from across Nelson Mandela University today for the first day of Learning & Teaching Week 2026.

With the theme “Dynamics of Humanisation”, today’s programme explored what it means to move from simply delivering content to creating more meaningful, inclusive and transformative learning experiences.

From engaging conversations and presentations to interactive activities, it was a great day of sharing ideas, learning from one another and reflecting on the future of teaching and learning. 📚💡
