Don’t rely on Google Translate!
Translation tools can be very useful for basic translations and even serve as effective supplemental learning tools for language learners, but they are nowhere near close to mimicking a human’s interpretation or understanding of a language and its cultural cues necessary for effective communication. For this reason, computer translations often produce varying and unreliable results—from the totally absurd to the awkward or mismatched in tone.
Let’s look at the varying translations provided by Google Translate for the word “flat”:

(a) The road is flat – Indlela ithe tyaba (correct)
(b) My battery is flat – Ibhetri yam icaba (incorrect, because (a) “caba is used incorrectly, and (b) even when used correctly, refers to something that is lying flat)
(c) The tyre is flat – Ivili lithe tyaba (incorrect, same translation as (a)). Could read "Ivili liqgabukile, alinamoya,"etc, literally, “The tyre has burst, has no air”, etc.
(d) He is lying flat – Ulele phantsi (incorrect, because this literally means “he is lying down”, instead of "ucambelele")

Online language classes of today
While language classes in the past were primarily characterized by grammar, dictation, and drills, today’s online learning platforms are dynamic centers for interaction that harness the power of the Internet and other educational technologies—from apps and interactive online resources. Educators are placing greater emphasis on authentic, student-centered learning—focusing less on rote memorization of rules and more on creating real-life scenarios that serve practical applications. Advanced language classes at SpeakeasyXhosa for medical. business students and teachers, among others, bring this practical approach to an even more specific career focus, giving learners the exact language tools they will need to succeed in their sector. Students have the opportunity to create blogs and video projects, compete in games and track their improvement. One thing is for certain: this is no longer your grandmother’s language classroom.
