Missionvale Care Centre

For a month now, our school (Normoyle Primary) has been dealing with sewage flooding on the school premises.

This has created an unacceptable health and safety risk for our learners, staff and the wider school community. A school simply cannot be expected to operate under these conditions!

The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities, and we have a Ref Number:2068838. However, after weeks of following up DAILY, we continue to be referred back and forth between the Municipality and the local councillor, with the matter still unresolved.

A month is too long. Our children deserve to learn in an environment that is safe, clean and healthy.

We appeal to the relevant municipal departments and officials to attend to this matter, URGENTLY!

Our ITDC soccer & netball teams took on our good friends from Indlela Mental Health New Brighton in the Ubunye Sports Tournament semi-finals.

It’s been a minute since we’ve linked up, so it was good to see the Indlela team again, even if we had to compete against each other this time! 😂

On World Humanitarian Day, we remember Sr Ethel Normoyle, a woman whose life of service reached far beyond Missionvale. In 1996, Sr E received the Tipperary Peace Award, a recognition of the extraordinary humanitarian work she was doing.

But behind the award was the same woman who had always simply seen a need and chosen to do something about it.

She saw poverty. She saw children who needed opportunities. She saw families who needed support. And above all, she saw people with potential, dignity and a future worth fighting for.

She set out to serve. She cared deeply. She showed up. She listened. She fought for better opportunities. And she never stopped believing that change was possible.

Because humanitarianism is not only about the awards or recognition that may come afterwards…It can be as simple as seeing someone, caring enough to act and refusing to look away.

That was Sr Ethel 🩵🏆

During Sister Ethel’s month, and in celebration of Women’s Month, we gathered for our Fig Tree Legacy Fund Breakfast, bringing together old friends and new partners who believe in what Missionvale can become. 🩵

Nearly four decades ago, a lovely lady began something small under a wild fig tree. What grew from that beginning became a place of education, opportunity, dignity and belief in people.

The morning opened with our Stakeholder Liaison, Lucky Ngamlana reflecting on Sr Ethel’s words, “Poverty is a lack of options,” and the difference it makes when someone believes in your potential, nurtures it and gives you room to grow.

What a special honour to have had Prof Darelle van Greunen as our guest speaker, bringing both brilliance and heart to the room. She shared thoughtful insights on AI, adapting to a changing world and importantly, learning to use what is available to us to create better possibilities for the future.

And even the centrepieces told a story. Handmade cars and balls, created from everyday materials, reflected the ABCD approach at the heart of Missionvale: seeing what is already there and finding ways to help it grow…

A heartfelt note of appreciation to the Boardwalk Hotel and Conference Centre, Mastertons Coffee & Tea, CB Entertainment and Michelle Brown. Your generosity helped bring this special breakfast to life, we are truly grateful! To Prof Darelle, thank you for reminding us to embrace change, think differently and equip ourselves for what lies ahead.

And to everyone who joined us, thank you for sharing your morning with us and making space for the vision behind the Fig Tree Legacy Fund. 🩵

Five years ago today, you gained your angel wings.

Five years, and we still miss you terribly…

We miss your voice, your Irish lilt, laughing together… We remember your determination, kindness, and the extraordinary way you made every person feel seen.

Today, we remember you with love, gratitude and, above all, a deep sense of how very much we wish you were still here.
