The voices we heard on 16 June 1976 are the same ones we support in classrooms everyday, its a reminder as to why we exist: to build strong foundations in mathematics and science so the youth can lead us into a prosperous future.
Nelson Mandela University remembers this day, 50 years ago, when thousands of brave and determined young learners took to the streets in protest against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools. Their courage, conviction and sacrifice were a defining moment in South Africa’s struggle for freedom and justice. Fifty years on, today’s youth stand on the shoulders of those young revolutionaries who demonstrated the power of collective action and the importance of making their voices heard. While much progress has been made, the journey towards a more just, equitable and inclusive society continues.
As we commemorate the legacy of 16 June 1976, may our young people continue to exercise their agency, lead with purpose and help shape the future they envision for themselves and generations to come.

Africa Week 25-29 May: Celebrating African Roots of Mathematics
Mathematics didn't start in textbooks - it started here.
Tens of Millenia ago, early Africans created the first tools for counting and tracking time. The Lebombo Bone, found between Eswatini and South Africa and dated to c. 35,000 BCE, is the oldest known mathematical artifact. With 29 notches, it likely served as a lunar calendar.
This Africa Week, we honor the ingenuity and legacy of African mathematical traditions that laid the foundation for global scientific progress.
Africa Week 2026 is coming! Save the dates: 25 -29 May and join us for a vibrant week of celebration.
