🥋 Tora Dojo Shines at the WUKF Eastern Cape Karate & Kobudo League Round II 🥋
We are incredibly proud of our nine Tora Dojo members who recently participated in the WUKF Eastern Cape Karate & Kobudo League Round II.
Together, our competitors achieved an outstanding result, bringing home:
🥇 5 Gold Medals
🥈 9 Silver Medals
🥉 1 Bronze Medal
While the medals are a fantastic achievement, the true victory lies in having the courage to step onto the tatami and compete. It takes determination, discipline, and strength of character to test yourself in front of judges, opponents, and spectators. Every competitor who participated demonstrated these qualities, and we congratulate each and every one of you.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the rest of our dojo family who supported, encouraged, and helped prepare our athletes. Success is built through teamwork, and your contribution is greatly appreciated.
Finally, a special thank you to Sensei Karl for hosting another fantastic event and providing competitors with an excellent platform to showcase their skills.
Congratulations to all our participants – your hard work and dedication continue to make Tora Dojo proud! 👏🥋

Some people think karate is about fighting.
It’s not.
It’s about showing up on the days you don’t feel like it.
It’s about doing hard things, over and over again, until they become part of who you are.
It’s about learning control - not just of your body, but of your emotions.
Because life will test you.
And when it does, you fall back on what you’ve practiced.
That’s why we train.

Kumite has always been my first love in karate as it the most dynamic and exciting aspects of karate training. Often translated as “sparring” or “meeting of hands,” kumite is where techniques move beyond repetition and begin to take on real meaning. It is the testing ground where timing, distance, control, and intent come together. While kata builds structure, kumite is where a karateka learns how to apply those skills under pressure.
My karate journey, particularly in the kumite aspect, has been full of ups and downs. At times I have felt on top of the world only to be humbled in the next competition or sparring session. What I have discovered in three decades of karate is that being in a comfort zone is a terrible place to be. It is only when you are out of your comfort zone, when you are under pressure, that you really learn to fight.
Being able to fight under pressure is the objective of all combat training. You can learn a whole host of techniques but if you can not apply them under extreme pressure then all that training is wasted.
Kumite is not for everybody. If you have started karate it is because you want to learn to defend yourself and therefor you are willing to fight.
