Today we pause to honour the brave women who marched on the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956, protesting against the apartheid pass laws that restricted the movement of Black women across South Africa.

Over 20,000 women of all races stood together that day in one of the most powerful acts of resistance in South African history. Their courage changed the course of a nation.

Their rallying cry still echoes today:

"Wathint' Abafem, Wathint' Imbokodo"
"You strike a woman, you strike a rock."
