Achieving democracy in South Africa was an extremely expensive journey.
The expense lay in the huge sacrifices that activists and their families made to achieve a politically correct and free South Africa. These sacrifices included the loss of lives of many mothers and fathers as well as younger courageous women and men.
For the elder generation, they experienced the loss of prosperity because their children's lives were shortened and made insignificant by oppressive political architecture.
The hubs of resistance to apartheid were born in places of study, high schools and universities. Therefore the university and university students walk in the footsteps of those who came before them, who have left a rich heritage of resistance and activism.
Freedom Day provides an opportunity for older generations to pass on wisdom and values such as fairness, truthfulness, respect for humanity and self determination; and for the younger generation to demonstrate active citizenship so that South Africa may truly be free!
Today, we celebrate the hope that 27th April 1994 delivered.
Message from SDP Acting HOD: Dr Nevashnee Perumal
