The Call of the Kingdom-Our New Normal
What have you learned during this time of pandemic shutdown? What will you do differently going forward? Will your life change in any significant manner?
Like you, I have given this a great deal of thought. My deepest goal coming out of this period is to clear my life of non-essentials and focus on the things that make life worth living. The non-essentials would be sensationalism and cynical appeals to emotion. Fake news or non-news based on contrived images and personalities designed to manipulate are also part of what I will eliminate.
What are the “essentials” for me? That would be God, family and faith.
I have thought long and deep in these recent weeks. I have been trying to get closer to what I see two disciples doing in the hours following Jesus’ resurrection. Luke 24 shows us an intimate story of two disciples walking on the road to Emmaus a short distance from Jerusalem. As they walked, they were talking over the momentous events of the recent days, suffering and death of Jesus and then what had been discovered that morning—the empty tomb. They were trying to figure out what it all meant. The account says they were talking “of all the things which had happened” (Verse 14).
While they talked Jesus appeared among them. He asked them what they were discussing. As they walked, He began to show from scripture what had happened. This remarkable story teaches us what is essential. Reading the Bible and discussing it among ourselves is important. When we do, we will experience the lead of Christ among us as he promised. Christ walked with these disciples and helped them understand the most important knowledge.
When we apply ourselves to the Word of God, to seeking a real relationship with Him out of the true words of life, we are seeking the most essential aspects of this life. I have been going through a series of presentations on our new BT Extra platform. The latest is “The Road to Emmaus” and goes into this story from Luke’s gospel. I hope you will listen to it. It is part of the larger series, The Path to Pentecost.
As we come out of this pandemic we will see many parts of society change. We will adjust and life goes on. But a disciple of Jesus Christ cannot afford to go “back to normal.” For us there must be a “new normal.” The work of the kingdom calls us. We must respond. Christ is preparing His Church for a greater work ahead. I hope you will stay with us on that journey.
Until next time,
