IMAP - Improving Malnutrition through Active Participation Improving childhood nutrition & development through transformative health education messages. A collaborative participatory action approach in Eastern Cape

The nutrition that a child receives during the first few years of life can affect their mental-and physical development as well as their long-term health throughout the individual’s adult life. Continuous under-nutrition during childhood can eventually lead to stunting, wasting and an increased risk of developing severe acute malnutrition. Being able to detect early indications of stunting, wasting and under-nutrition is of major importance to timeously intervene and allow for rehabilitation and catch-up growth. This Participatory Action Research (PAR) is parent of a multi-disciplinary project which seeks to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to standardise nutrition education messages and promote child growth in South Africa. All moms (both HIV-positive and HIV-negative) should breastfeed their babies for as long as possible, at least until 2 years of age? If you are HIV-positive remember to always take your HIV or antiviral treatment - it will keep you and your baby healthy.

-Non-breastfed babies are more prone than breastfed new-borns to get respiratory (lung) and ear infections
- Breastmilk is superior to infant formula milk. Nothing can compete with breastfeeding
- Breastfeeding is the most natural and healthy nourishment for babies!
- Non-breastfed babies do not require additional formulae (Stages 3 and 4) and can begin drinking cow's milk at the age of 12 months.
