A little behind the scenes of how this one came together…
Layer by layer, from the first washes to the deeper blues, the tulips and finally some touches of gold leaf.
This ginger jar has a special significance for me. I first painted a version of this in 2019, in one of my earliest detailed watercolours. That painting, along with all my other paintings and basically my packed up studio was lost in the 2021 KZN unrest when the storage facility housing them was burnt to ashes.
Nearly 5 years later, I found myself painting this jar again — not to recreate what was lost, but as a reminder that we can begin again.
The small candle at the centre was inspired by the saying, “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” For me, its flame and the touches of gold represent hope, kindness and light persisting through darker times.
Even after loss, the flame remains. ✨

A late post from the first Sunday of August.
Gorgeous morning for en plein air painting with Plein Air Cape Town.
Thank you Joanna Lee Miller for coordinating these opportunities to get together to capture the beauty of Cape Town.

So I haven’t posted in a while. I was busy with a few paintings to submit for exhibitions. Some of the juried exhibitions request that you do not share your work online until post selections hence the silence 🤫.
My favorite blooms…hydrangeas again, inspired by Ellen Ughetto-Suurenbroek 🇳🇱🇫🇷 gorgeous photography.
Painting is food for my soul and the act of painting each petal, although sometimes painful, is mostly therapeutic ☺️
This one is called Luminous Silence

Another foray into landscapes. It makes one appreciate the beauty that South Africa has to offer-this one is the lovely view in Hillcrest, KZN.
Is it just me or is this the most satisfying part of the painting process - especially when it’s taken months to complete!
Things artists understand …the awkwardness of explaining to work colleagues who don’t know you paint why you had to take photos of the floral arrangement at a work lunch🤭…but just knew I had to paint it🌸
Enjoyable morning out this weekend: Art in Nature at Lower Silvermine.
Thank you for coordinating.
About art class last night…
Something magical about seeing watercolors granulate and blend on paper🤩
Completely out of my comfort zone, we painted figures from a live model - definitely a challenge!
Thankfully, made the process feel far less intimidating as our wonderful art instructor🙏🏼
Another quick painting, wet on wet to get a more atmospheric feel. Sketchbook has cotton paper made in Amalfi. Quite different from my go to Arches paper.
Cape Town in all her glory for a bit of plein air this morning with group🎨. Thank you for lovely initiative!
Was a bit tricky seen the wood from the trees (literally☺️) but super relaxing and peaceful.
Braved the cooler temperatures for beautiful morning out painting with at Rhodes Memorial.
Enjoyed using Sennelier oil pastels, very portable and quick with luxurious colours.
