Apprenticeships for young people are an excellent way of getting a foot into a shrinking employment pool. “Best of all, young South Africans who embrace apprenticeships can enjoy earning whilst they learn. This is an important enabler for many young people to make a monetary contribution to parents or custodians and get them from their residences to either the training institution or the workplace,” says Jakkie Olivier, CEO of the Retail Motor Industry (RMI), the largest collective employer in the automotive aftermarket.

It’s Cool to be a 21st Century Artisan – just ask third-year Port Elizabeth TVET College apprentice, 𝐄𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐤𝐞, who walked off with Gold at the fourth WorldSkills South Africa (WSZA) Biennial National Competition which took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in KwaZulu-Natal from 7–10 June.

He was closely followed by 20-year-old 𝐂𝐞𝐚𝐣𝐚𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧, a second-year automotive motor mechanic apprentice, also from the Port Elizabeth TVET College, who won Gold in the automotive motor mechanic sector, at WorldSkills Africa in Namibia earlier this year.

Sabelo Buthelezi, Chief Director Special Projects Unit for the Department of Higher Education, says, “The excellent skill sets shown during the competition are really encouraging. Our minister has now prioritised this CoS pilot project as a CoS programme that will gradually be expanded nationally according to set criteria and based on demand. Critically this is a demand-driven training intervention and it is highly dependent on collaboration and input from industry. Facilitator training is one of the key pillars of our programme and the results we are seeing today are evidence of the success of the partnership with HWK and retail organisations like RMI. As technology and the sector continue to evolve, we need to ensure these changes are built into our curriculum so that our apprentices can compete anywhere on the world stage.”

𝐏𝐒𝐋 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜

Goalkeeper 𝐓𝐚𝐩𝐮𝐰𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐢 of Highlands Park has swapped his goalkeeping gloves for a blue overall and has a bright future ahead. He now runs a motor workshop in Kempton Park. Many professional sportsmen often struggle to make a living when they are not playing professionally. Luckily Tapuwa found his passion and is loving the new challenges his workshop brings.
