Emotional nurture is the single most important factor in a child's growth and development. It is nurture that allows all of the potentials of the child to unfold with perfection, and that includes the growth of the actual brain of the child. Lack of nurture stunts what is possible. When the brain is stunted, so is the capacity of the mind.

Criticism ignites shame, and shame is corrosive. It erodes trust. It undermines confidence. It devours energy. It steals happiness. It internalizes pain. Shaming children may or may not be effective in correcting behavior in the short-term, but it has potentially devastating lifelong consequences. Guard your children’s hearts fiercely, my friends. Handle them tenderly. Guide them gently. Accept them freely. Love them unconditionally. The adults they become will thank you for it, and this world will be a far better place with more heart-whole humans instead of more refugees from childhood.

Somehow the arts have lost favour with the funders, though not only funders. There seems to be a prejudice against the arts in many parents' and teachers' minds, and yet creative expression is basic to being human. Blessed are the teachers and parents who make space for creative expression, it is the basis of being fully human. No other species has the ability to create anything they set their mind to, we are it. We can honour that creative gift by setting up an environment that encourages our children to sing, to dance, to make, to build...
