For Nikki Verduin, completing the Hotel Opening Management minor at Stenden South Africa became an experience she will always look back on with gratitude.

Before arriving in South Africa, Nikki already knew she loved travelling. But her time here helped her discover even more: new cultures, breathtaking landscapes, meaningful friendships and a stronger sense of confidence and independence.

Through her minor, Nikki gained valuable academic knowledge while also experiencing life beyond the classroom. From unforgettable safaris and hiking trails to learning more about the local culture, her time in South Africa became a journey of both personal and academic growth.

What if a minor gave you the chance to create work that mattered beyond the classroom? 🎥🌍

As part of the Grand Tour, Maria Dias Fernandes joined Stenden South Africa to complete the Digital Storytelling for Social Change minor. During her time in Port Alfred, she created a documentary about Onele Veto, a young Nemato entrepreneur whose township tours support local businesses and bring greater visibility to his community.

The project gave Maria practical experience in directing, interviewing and documentary storytelling, but its impact went far beyond technical skills. By spending time with Onele, his family and other local business owners, she gained a deeper understanding of the community and built relationships that continued beyond filming. What began as a student project became a genuine friendship and a story with the potential to support Onele’s business and amplify voices from Nemato.

That is what makes minors like this so meaningful. Students work with real people, explore real social issues and learn how storytelling can build trust, create connection and make an impact. 💛

There is far more to a luxury wine estate than what guests see.

During her internship at Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate, Miane Toth has been discovering both sides of the guest experience, from the moments visitors enjoy to the planning and coordination that make them possible.

Her time at the estate has included barista training, hosting high tea experiences and expanding her knowledge of wine tastings. She has also gained insight into the administrative and logistical side of Food & Beverage operations, giving her a better understanding of what it takes to keep a luxury hospitality environment running smoothly.

It is this behind-the-scenes experience that has stood out most to Miane, showing her how much teamwork, preparation and attention to detail sit behind every service.

As her internship draws to a close, she takes with her practical experience, a deeper appreciation for the industry and a growing passion for hospitality, wine tourism and luxury guest experiences.

Thank you to the team at Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate for welcoming Miane and investing in her learning throughout her internship.

From Stenden South Africa to Munich, Germany. 🌍

South African student Fergus Johnstone is currently completing an international internship with Cosinuss GmbH in Munich as part of his Bachelor of Business Administration in Disaster Management at Stenden South Africa. As a Business Development Intern, Fergus is contributing to exploratory work on how continuous ear-based vital-sign monitoring could support disaster response and early recovery workflows. His work looks at how wearable biosensor technology and real-time physiological data could help improve response speed, decision-making and safety in high-pressure emergency environments while also considering important ethical, privacy and data-protection requirements.

From 3 to 5 July, Fergus also attended the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine Disaster Medicine Summer School in San Marino, where he represented Cosinuss GmbH, one of the sponsors of the event. During the three-day programme, he attended lectures and took part in a tabletop exercise covering disaster medicine, mass-casualty incidents, counter-terrorism medicine, CBRN and disaster evaluation research. The experience gave him the opportunity to engage with disaster medicine and disaster management experts from different countries and explore how Cosinuss’ ear-based continuous vital-sign monitoring technology could be integrated into future disaster and emergency workflows.

For Fergus, this internship brings together disaster management, digital health and wearable technology, giving him the opportunity to contribute to a growing area of innovation within the disaster management field. His story is a powerful example of where studying at Stenden South Africa can lead: real-world experience, international exposure and opportunities that connect learning with the future of the industry.

Meet Jess van Schalkwyk, a proud Stenden South Africa alum and the Managing Director of Disaster Nomad.

Jess’ journey into disaster management started at Stenden South Africa in 2015. Since then, her career has taken her into international response and recovery deployments with All Hands and Hearts, government disaster management through the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre and Western Cape Government, and now disaster preparedness within the tourism sector through her own work with Disaster Nomad.

Through Disaster Nomad, Jess has also worked with organisations such as UNICEF, Save the Children, Ibex Ideas and Oxfam, supporting work linked to preparedness, resilience and disaster risk reduction. She also completed her Master’s degree through Coventry University, further strengthening her expertise in the field.

In this video, Jess shares how practical learning, first responder engagement and a strong foundation at Stenden helped shape her career and her passion for the sector.

Studying at Stenden South Africa can take you further than you think. ✨

For South African student Siân Hadfield, her Stenden journey recently took her to Thailand, where she completed the Events Minor at Stenden Thailand. The minor gave Siân the opportunity to apply event planning and hosting skills in a real-world context while learning what it takes to create successful events in an international environment.

Through field trips, industry exposure and experiences connected to Thai culture and hospitality, she gained confidence, practical skills and a broader understanding of the global events industry. Now back in South Africa, Siân has chosen to continue her learning journey by completing a second minor, this time in Wildlife Management at Stenden South Africa. 🌍

Her story reflects the range of opportunities available to Stenden students, from international study and cultural exchange to developing knowledge across more than one area of interest.
