Limpopo Department of Education HoD Maropene Seshibe, accompanied by departmental officials, visited Mokutupi Primary School in Mopani West where a Grade 7 learner tragically lost his life following an electrocution incident. The HoD and the team also assessed the school’s infrastructure and safety conditions.

The delegation later visited the bereaved family to convey condolences and offer support during this difficult time.

“We are deeply hurt by this tragic loss. As the Department, we came here to stand with the family because we work together with parents in caring for and protecting our learners. We were looking forward to seeing this child one day wear a graduation gown, but sadly, the unexpected has happened. Let us work together to identify and remove anything that may pose a danger to our learners and ensure that our schools remain safe," said HoD Seshibe.

[DAY 01] Intersen Provincial Language Enrichment Competitions.

In commemoration of International Literacy Day, Limpopo Department of Education held the Intersen Provincial Language Enrichment Competitions for Intermediate Phase at The Ranch Hotel outside Polokwane.

The competition promotes literacy, language development and confidence among learners through engaging activities including Spelling Bee, Storytelling and Read Aloud. Under the theme: “Order, Discipline in our Actions, Responsibility in our Choices, Excellence in our Character,” learners are showcasing their language skills while embracing the values that contribute to excellence.

LIMPOPO EDUCATION MEC MAVHUNGU LERULE-RAMAKHANYA CONDEMNS SPATE OF SCHOOL BURGLARIES IN SEKHUKHUNE SOUTH

The Limpopo MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, strongly condemns the recent burglaries at Onismus Mogafe Primary School and Dikgalaopeng Primary School. These incidents are the latest in a concerning pattern of break-ins reported within a single circuit of the Sekhukhune South Education District.

The burglaries have led to the loss of critical educational resources and extensive damage to school infrastructure, disrupting normal operations and compromising the safety of the affected schools.

At Onismus Mogafe Primary School, the break-in took place during the night of 06 September 2026. Stolen items include a CPU, two laptops, two speakers, a projector, an ATEL A06 mobile phone, a television set, a VCR, a backup battery, new school uniforms, a stepladder, as well as 24 tins of fish and milk. The suspects forced entry through several security points, causing significant damage. The South African Police Service (SAPS) attended the scene and investigations are currently underway.

At Dikgalaopeng Primary School, the burglary was discovered on 04 September 2026 after officials arrived to find that several offices had been broken into. The perpetrators reportedly gained access to the premises by breaking the lock of a pedestrian gate. The stolen items include 46 Grade 1 tablets, a CCTV DVR, a projector and a multiplug. The school’s Wi-Fi infrastructure was also tampered with. A SAPS forensic team processed the scene and collected potential evidence, including two caps found inside the administration office and broken pieces of the backdoor lock.

The department is deeply concerned that the theft of technological equipment and damage to infrastructure have disrupted teaching and learning while leaving remaining assets vulnerable. At Dikgalaopeng Primary School, staff were unable to perform normal administrative duties on site while forensic teams preserved the crime scene.

“Schools are centres of learning and development and should never be reduced to targets for criminal activity. The theft of equipment intended to support teaching, learning and administration directly harms our learners and the wider community. We condemn these acts in the strongest terms and urge law-enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to book,” said MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya.

The MEC appeals to School Governing Bodies (SGBs), parents, community structures and residents to remain vigilant and to work closely with the department and the police in safeguarding school infrastructure and resources.

The department will continue to monitor these incidents closely and will work with school management, SGBs and law-enforcement authorities. We remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting school infrastructure and ensuring that resources meant for learners are used for their intended educational purpose.
