We have grazed the occasion to officially open the TT Cholo Fire Station today in the presence of his younger brother Ephraim Cholo and the extended family members of Veteran Dr. TTCholo.
We honoured a man who attempted to come into the country three times during the difficult days. For his troubles, the first time around he spent over two years in a Botswana prison, after betrayal by a Maswara man. Served his time and went to the Soviet Union where he was trained and prepared to enter the country by sea in a ship called the Aventura. When the voyage was aborted before getting to Mombasa, Kenya, he was next on a flight to Eswatini where he landed at Matsapa airport. He crossed the border into Mpumalanga. As had happened in Botswana the person who was supposed to meet him and two other comrades never showed up. They get a lift from a truck carrying tarred wooden poles and sit on the logs. They get to Mkhondo/former Piet Retief covered in lack tar and they manage to wash under a tap. They take a train to Jozi and stay underground until the coast is clear and he takes a train to Polokwane. All the while a mpimpi is watching. A few weeks later he is captured by heavily armed SAP members with the help of the rascal who was monitoring him. He is transferred to a Pretoria prison where he is stripped naked, tied to the roof of a prison cell - in the fashion of a slaughtered goat - and beaten up. This unbreakable guerrilla was charged and sent to Robben Island where he was held until release on the eve of freedom. Served the ANC in Limpopo province until retirement. He eventually received the well deserved Seaparankwe award not a moment too soon.
Tough as nails, he lived to be 100 years! He will be 101 years in October this year - next month.
They don’t make many like that. This steel was tempered in the crucible of struggle. Maatla!
