Happy Feast Day
Saint Bede the Venerable
Doctor of the Church
672/673-735
Feast Day: May 25
Patronage: English writers, historians, Jarrow, St. Bede High School
Saint Bede was a Benedictine monk in Britain. He was the greatest scholar, author, and teacher of his time, deeply versed in the sciences and history, and known as the “Father of English History”. As a linguist and translator, he brought the works of the Latin and Greek writings of the early church fathers to the English, which contributed significantly to English Christianity. St. Bede was the first to date events anno domin (AD). He’s called Venerable to acknowledge his wisdom and learning.
As a monk, Bede gave absolute priority to prayer, fasting and charitable hospitality. He regarded all other works as valueless without the love of God and one's neighbor. However, Bede also possessed astounding intellectual gifts, which he used to survey and master a wide range of subjects according to an all-encompassing vision of Christian scholarship.
Bede declined a request to become abbot of his monastery. Instead, he concentrated on writing, and produced more than 45 books – primarily about theology and the Bible, but also on science, literature, and history. He also taught hundreds of students at the monastery and its school, which became renowned throughout Britain.
During Bede's own lifetime, his spiritual and intellectual gifts garnered wide recognition. His writings on scripture were considered so authoritative that a Church council ordered them to be publicly read in English churches. Some of the most illustrious members of English society made pilgrimages to his monastery to seek his guidance, and he was personally invited to Rome by Pope Sergius.
Bede, however, was unfazed by these honors. Perhaps inspired by the Benedictine monastic ethos, which emphasizes one's absolute commitment to the monastic community, he chose not to visit Rome, or to travel any significant distance beyond the Monastery.

Lenten Season Begins.
There's a day that comes around each year when you might see people walking around with black marks on their foreheads—it's a day known as Ash Wednesday.
This year, Ash Wednesday falls on March 5, 2025. Ash Wednesday is always 40 days before Easter. It's technically 46 days before Easter, if you include Sundays, but Sundays are traditionally considered feast days, a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ; therefore, they are not included in the penitential season. The forty days of Lent point to Jesus Christ's 40-day fast and temptation in the wilderness after being baptized.

The Benedictine monks of Subiaco extend their heartfelt greetings to all learners and staff of St. Bede's Hostel and the school. In this season of hope and new beginnings, it is essential to celebrate the achievements of our matriculants while also offering support to those who faced challenges.
Education is a journey filled with ups and downs. This year, many learners have successfully completed their National Senior Certificate examinations, showcasing their hard work and dedication. These accomplishments deserve recognition and celebration, as they reflect not just academic excellence but also the perseverance and commitment of both students and educators. For those who performed well, this achievement marks the beginning of new opportunities and experiences in their lives. It is a moment to be proud of, illustrating the fruits of their labor.
Conversely, we acknowledge those who did not attain the results they had hoped for. The monks encourage these students to view their experience as a stepping stone rather than a setback. Success is often intertwined with failure, and every challenge faced can lead to personal growth. It is crucial for leaners to seek guidance, develop resilience, and understand that their worth extends beyond examination results. This year offers a fresh start and the possibility to learn from past experiences, emphasizing that it is never too late to pursue one's goals.
As the 2025 school year unfolds, it presents itself as a blank canvas filled with potential. The Benedictine monks hope that all learners and staff embrace this year with enthusiasm and determination. The essence of education lies not solely in academic achievement but also in the values of community, respect, and empathy that are fostered within the school environment. The monks encourage everyone to support one another, maintaining a culture of kindness and collaboration.
In conclusion, as we step into the new year, let us celebrate the successes of our matriculants
