Have you seen tortoises or chameleons being sold on the side of the road? 🐢🦎

Along the R556 and R510 towards Sun City in the North West Province, this illegal trade is a serious concern.

Small wild animals are crammed into old tyres, plastic bottles, or cooler boxes. They are exposed to the heat, repeatedly handled, dehydrated, stressed, and often heavily infested with parasites.

It’s heartbreaking to drive past. Many people buy them to try to save them. Sadly, buying keeps the trade alive.

Every animal purchased is replaced with another taken from the wild.

With Easter weekend approaching and more vehicles on the roads, please be vigilant. If you see wildlife being sold, please report it to the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) at 018 389 5032/5527.

Keeping, transporting, or selling indigenous wildlife without permits is illegal in South Africa. The kindest thing you can do is not to buy, but to report. 🌍
