Chimwemwe Mwenyemasi was born in 1989 in Malika Village, Chiradzulu District, Malawi. His father made shoes from old leather bags, and as a boy Chimwemwe spent time watching him work. When his father died, Chimwemwe took on responsibility for his siblings, including paying their school fees. He tried his hand at being a DJ for a while, but the family craft kept pulling him back...

Around 2011 he began making shoes on his own. In 2012 he joined the Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust in Balaka, where he eventually became head of the cobbler section. The cooperative gave him space, tools, and a chance to develop his skills properly. He started small -- making shoes for friends and family -- using what he had learned from his father and adding his own designs...

Over time, Chimwemwe built Mwenyemasi Shoe Company. In 2022 he received a loan from the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF). With it he bought a new machine that increased his daily output significantly. Today his workshop produces durable, well-made shoes that sell locally and have reached markets in South Africa. He also trains other young people in shoemaking, including groups in Malawi and neighboring countries like Lesotho and Eswatini.

What stands out about Chimwemwe’s work is how ordinary it actually is. He did not inherit a factory or large capital. He started with basic skills, limited resources, and steady effort.

This shows shows shoe manufacturing in Malawi does not require a big company behind it. A person with the right training, persistence, and some support can build a viable operation that creates jobs and produces goods people need.
