An interesting listen for all parents or teachers of 3-7 year olds about development and learning.

"When we encourage children to follow their own lead, we get better academic results. When we push the child slightly, that tends to inhibit risk taking, which is a fundamental part of building your intelligence."

Some of these ideas really challenge the way we've perceived child rearing as a community and provide a good basis from which to prepare our children to become healthy learners and successful adults.

Recently we published a post about South Africa's struggling reading levels with the comparison on a global scale. From a more positive angle, solutions to South Africa's education crisis do exist, and New Korland Academy plans to be a part of it.

Instilling a healthier relationship with maths and sciences in South African learners should begin at an Early Childhood Development (ECD) level. While results in KZN have improved over the past few years, much more needs to be done to scrape us off the bottom of the barrel.

In order to foster this change in our young learners, New Korland Academy has partnered with Experi-Buddies to develop a healthy interest in the sciences. We look forward to creating the change we want to see!


According to the Gauteng DOE, in 2015, most Grade R learners were not ready to enter the formal schooling system at the end of their grade R year.

Parents should instil the desire in their children to want to achieve the best quality of life possible through a sound education.

New Korland Academy plans to address some of these shortfalls in the education system at a foundational level. Providing young learners with the tools to succeed academically from an early age.

“South Africa is last out of 50 countries in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (Pirls).”

It’s no secret that reading and writing levels are terrifyingly low in South Africa, and placing last on a list of 50 countries is nothing short of embarrassing.
Learners don’t meet the basic requirements to succeed academically.

South Africa is rooted to the bottom of the class when it comes to teaching children to read.

The curriculum is further designed to suit English first language speakers as well as English second language speakers.
