Well,well,well! We have already reached Day 5 of our lockdown. As difficult as the times are, there have been many positive things that have/are happening! No need to expand on those here.
Just thought we might continue to share a little more on our passion for reading. No! Don't stop!!
Some brief comments:
1. Now that many of us have more time available, read to and with your child every day. This can be a hugely beneficial time of sharing and bonding for all concerned.
2. Do you still remember the Nursery Rhymes you were taught as a child. Teach them to your child even though they might be scoffed at by some folk.
3. There is printed stuff around your home. Encourage your child to read the printed matter on cans of food, cereal cartons; milk bottles,etc.
4. Pictures are a wonderful resource. Chat to your child about a picture. Ask questions about the picture-What do you think is happening in this picture? What about the colours in the picture? How many children in the picture? Describe what they are wearing? Why?
5. Let your child read to you daily-however well they do/do not read.
6.Read only as long as your child is interested!!!!
7. Let your child see you reading. They will then see it as an important hobby.

Our exciting visit to the Natural Sciences Museum was a "hit"!! We spent time doing our Social Sciences tasks and found that interesting, stimulating and very enjoyable!!

Then we headed off to the Birds and Animals section but "Hey Presto"! We were stopped in our tracks to find that internationally acclaimed authoress and story-teller, Gcina Mhlope was about to start telling stories!!! We then experienced an unforgettable time as she shared one of her stories with an entranced audience. Needless to say : We never did do the Natural Science section.
A truly wonderful experience for our children!!

Our commitment to all aspects of reading continues unabated. The regular visits to the local library- which is well resourced -is a highlight of our life at SLC.
Very soon now we will be undertaking a trip to the local Natural Sciences Museum as part of our SS and NS work. At SLC we attempt to make use of all resources available to enrich our children's lives.

Despite inclement weather Samlyn Learning Centre held a most enjoyable and highly successful Reading Hour. The purpose of this was to give parents, friends and children a time to leave the "everyday" things behind and just sit and read for enjoyment. Actvities included reading, playing reading related card games, listening to stories through headphones and generally having some Reading Fun. SLC is totally committed to reading and all of its related facets. A great time was had by all!
