The Butterfly Run is a movement and listening activity where the children pretend to be butterflies flying around. When the teacher calls “flower!”, the children stop and stand next to a flower. It helps develop gross motor skills, listening, concentration and following instructions, while making movement fun. 🦋

Spring break, busy hands and a little egg discovery! 🌱🥚🌸

Our holiday care team have been wonderful helpers, tending to the veggie garden while our Elementary classes enjoy a little spring break. Someone even spotted eggs tucked away in a corner and gathered them for the kitchen to use!

In between caring for the garden, there’s been plenty of time for obstacle adventures, flower hopscotch and other good old-fashioned fun. A happy mix of helping, exploring and playing—the way holidays should be! 💚

We often think of education as an investment that becomes more important as our children get older — good schools, strong matric results and, eventually, university.

But what if the most important educational investment happens before the age of six?

🌿 The beauty of a Montessori Elementary classroom…

At first glance, this may simply look like a room full of children working in different places, on different things.

But look a little closer.

Some children are working independently at tables. Others are collaborating with friends. Some have chosen the floor, where they have the space to spread out their materials. A small group is receiving guidance from an adult, while elsewhere children are deeply absorbed in work they are ready to tackle themselves.

This is Montessori Elementary.

There is no expectation that every child must sit at the same desk, complete the same worksheet, at the same pace, at the same moment.

Instead, the environment is carefully prepared so that children can move, choose, explore, collaborate, concentrate and take increasing responsibility for their own learning.

And yet, this freedom is not without structure. Montessori is freedom within limits. Behind what may appear wonderfully informal is purposeful work, carefully sequenced materials, individual lessons, observation and guidance.

Perhaps the most beautiful part is that learning becomes something children participate in, rather than something that is simply done to them.

They learn how to ask questions.
How to seek answers.
How to work with others.
How to work alone.
How to manage their time.
And gradually, how to become responsible for their own learning.
